You never tried Remicade, even after a sixteen-months flare? I didn't even know people could really flare for sixteen months... you must've had quite a few months of "light" flaring. If I think of my most severe flares, I would've died without surgery (probably a colectomy) after a couple of months when the symptoms were at their most extreme - literally. I cannot imagine a sixteen-months flare, without major fluctuation in the severity of the flare over that period of time.
I think it's pretty rare to die from a flare up. I come from a rural area in Canada where people traditionally don't like to diagnose their mental/medical health issues unless they're on the surface (ie: a broken leg, a cut etc). Small town thinking I guess. Anyway, they used to call Ulcerative Colitis the "bloody plague" or "the bloody runs" or some such thing as far back as the 19th century. I had a great uncle who had it all of his life and people knew about
it. He was never treated and apparently always in a full flare up yet he didn't die from it (at least not directly). JFK also had UC before it was well known and he had it for years while all the treatments were in their infancy.
Anyway, moving on:
Here is the situation. I'm having a flare up and I'm living abroad. It is hard to get treatment here BUT (and I'd like your advice on this) there is an English speaking doctor in this country that is known for giving out any medication you ask him for. He takes foreign patients like me and assumes we aren't lying regarding our diagnosis (like who would want to try and get high on UC drugs anyway) and prescribes away.
What medication should I tell him to give me? Remicade? Canasa? Rowasa enemas? All three?I've got an appointment in three hours.
(Please take in account that I'm not made of money and am looking for the quickest fix possible :P)
