I finally got a hold of my DR and he put me on 40mg of prednisone. I was having 25+ bms a day and was miserable. I am currently taking Asacol, do I quit the Asacol or stay on it? Anyone know the answer to this or should i call his nurse? thanks in advance for your answers! confused

Yes, stay on your Asacol along with the prednisone (at least until you are told to taper the pred).

Dr will probably want you to stay on Asacol forever.... :/

Yes stay on the Asacol, it is to prevent flare-ups and as a previous post says, you will probably need to take it forever.  I have been on the maximum dose for over 10 years.  You need it when you are well to prevent flare-ups.  When you are ill take it the same or the doctor may increase your does, and you take Prednisolone aswell, to treat your symptomns when you are ill.

How long have you been on the Asacol? Are your symptoms better since being on it, or is this a breakthrough flare?

Generally speaking, you should stay on it. However, if it is new to you, and has had no effect or has made things worse, you may be reacting to it. If that is the case, I would check with your Dr.

I think it depends how you react to the prednisone. Were you taking Asacol when you began to flare up? I may be alone here but when I flared up, I was on 3600mg of Asacol daily and it seemed like it had become ineffective. When I started prednisone, my symptoms stopped in their tracks within a day or two. My GI told me I could stop taking Asacol for a while because we thought it was ineffective in treating the UC. At that time, I didn't take any meds except prednisone. A few weeks later, I tapered down to almost 0 and had a relapse, I ended up trying a bunch of 5ASAs but went back on Asacol without much improvement, finally I added 6mp. I am not sure if Asacol is doing anything for me so i am going to try to drop the dose after I am 100% stable.
