Nervous about school

After I was diagnosed with UC in the summer, I had not had any complaints other than mild diarrhea. A few weeks ago I went to Vermont (I am in northern NY) to help set up a new store for the company I work at. Monday to Friday I was up each day at 5 and working 10 hour days (definitely not what I am used to). I was also eating at restaurants for every meal. I don't know if I should blame eating out (which I rarely do at home) or the stress, but I have been flaring ever since. I am on prednisone and asacol and seem to be slowly improving, but now I am worried about the fall. After two years off from school (I graduated with a BS in Biology) I am going back to become a physical therapists assistant. I had thought about nursing, but I thought that I couldn't deal with the long days I would have to work starting out. I thought I could find a place in a physical therapist's office faster than a doctor's as a nurse (an office setting seems much less stressful than a hospital setting). But now dealing with this flare, I am worried about school. I know worrying doesn't help, but I am concerned about the stress of school causing a flare and it was hard enough today dragging myself through a 6 hour shift at work where all I had to do was give out change and say "have a nice day." I guess I just wanted to whine. I'll try to be more optimistic...

I was diagnosed with UC last year in my second semester. And it's harder to cope with a diagnosis when in school then before heading to college, IMO. I was putting in 40-50 hours a week (putting in more hours for my last year), and I was only getting three hours of sleep a night. Once I was diagnosed I told my professors immediately, because how could they help if they didn't know? They were understanding of what was going on and they did help with the work load, somewhat. Not saying that will happen with everyone.
Even though UC isn't considered a disability in college, just see what the institution can do. Talk to your student liaison, professors and dean to see what options you have.
I've been going to college full-time before and after I was diagnosed. It's isn't easy. It isn't impossible either. But I promised myself that if school put me into a flare I would drop out.
The best way to have stress not effect me during my last year is simply step away from school and everything else in my life, and just take a breather. That's helped with me. Sometime during every week I separate my life from school and look after myself.

Big tip: Tell the school stress seriously impacts your disease, and you cannot afford to miss college due to a flare.

I wasn't classed as a disabled student. I did look under the schools disability policy. Chronic illness was listed, but not UC or Crohn's. I also didn't get enough flexibility when my symptoms first started showing up. Until they started seeing the weight loss and my paleness, then they started to be a bit more flexible. But not enough. In my program, if you can't do the work then get out.

I agree fully that UC and Crohn's should be under that clause in EVERY institution, however, it wasn't under my school's. Unless it effected my life like a permanent disability effects someone else, they said I would qualify.
