Hi I have a lot of personal info on Active Manuka Honey.
Right, so I first heard of MH last year when I was abroad in Sydney. I heard about Manuka Honey online from http://www.colitisrecovery.com/ who posted a study that Manuka Honey helped the ulcer symptoms of mice with colitis. I researched it and could not believe that it was local to NZ, and quite popular in Australia. I popped by the local health food stores and found Active Manuka Honey 16+ and 20+ for around 24AUD.
After researching it thoroughly, I learned that anything less than 18+ is not suitable for internal purposes, but rather very good for external purposes. I remember coming across a website that showed a MRSA sore healing with Manuka Honey applied to it for a week. Amazing. I soon purchased the 20+ and began to test the affects on myself.
As the directions say, take on a piece of bread or cracker 30 minutes before a meal. This became my routine. I would eat a piece of bread COVERED in manuka honey 20+ every morning, every lunch, and every bed time. The immediate effects I noticed were that it helped bleeding tremendously... which makes sense. I mean, the blood is produced by an internal bleeding ulcer and it is proven Manuka Honey helps with stomach ulcers and external ulcers, so if it makes it's way to the colon... After using in conjunction with hydrocortisone enema, I entered a 2 month remission.
I had the pleasure of corresponding with Peter Molan Ph.D who is THE proprietor of Active Manuka Honey who has conducted lots of research at University of Waikato in NZ. He told me to make sure you buy Active Manuka Honey that has UMF license. (http://www.umf.org.nz/licensees) This is the only way to ensure the honey has been tested in a laboratory for it's active UMF benefits (rated on a number scale from 5+ to 30+)
Now, a year later, I haven't used manuka honey lately since I do not trust Wedderspoon (most popular commerical source in USA) and since I am on the SCD diet. Since Active Manuka Honey is antibacterial, it should act as anti-biotic: Not a goal of the SCD diet. I did use Active Manuka Honey in the beginning while on conjunction with prednisone and again, found relief of bleeding. But as I started to eat more yogurt and take probiotics, I began to realize the Active honey + probiotic may cancel each other out.
I agree on the Active Manuka Honey enema. Definitely worth it, but really expensive. I don't trust anything not from NZ. A Manuka Honey enema would most likely help colon ulcers tremendously...
Right now I am very happy with SCD diet, if things worsen up, Manuka Honey enema has one of the first things to try.
And right... A lot of people with UC will not tolerate honey due to high fructose/sugar content. Active Manuka Honey is specifically very sticky and caramelized... Honey is not the most suitable food for someone with digestive issues.
Interestingly, I studied at the University of Waikato and one of my good friends did her PhD with Dr Molan on Manuka honey and it's benefits in preventing dental cavities.
I don't doubt MH's medicinal usefulness one bit for wounds, antibacterial qualities etc. However I think the issue for UC sufferers is getting it to the site where it's needed i.e. the colon. Will taking it on a piece of cracker help? Maybe. But I suspect enemas may be the most efficient.
Has anyone tried that?
