Retaining suppositories

Sometimes in the morning I will find that some of the suppository (which has liquified in my rectum over the night) has leaked into my underwear. It's not a lot and doesn't always happen but does happen on occasion. Is this normal?

Yes, that happened to me at times too. I found if I inserted it just a bit higher then I didn't get as much leakage.

ugh yes....especially if one has any gas.
I so prefer the enemas.

Hi quincy, nice to hear from you again.

I've come back to this forum so I am not doing too well haha. I am confused by my symptoms. I've had 3 colonoscopies (and 1 proctoscope) all between Oct 2010 and Febuary 2011 and all have come back clear. During this time I was going to the toilet roughly 4 times a day without any blood or mucus. I was feeling slight left and right abdominal discomfort (spikes/pulses of mild pain and sometimes continuous aches) and stools were semi formed.

However since Feburary 6th I have seen confusing symptoms. For the first week or so things seemed to be getting better. My stools became a nice formed shape (probably a 4 on the bristol chart) had around 1 - 2 BMs a day and pains seemed to be subsiding (during this time I was eating a more balanced diet so that might have explained the improvement). However for no apparent reason (no dietry change took place) the next week my stools became less formed, mild left/right side pulsing pains started again and I was going to the bathroom 3 times a day. However, the next 2 - 3 weeks again saw an improvement with toilet trips being 2 per day, stools more formed and left/right pains stablizing (not going away but showing some consistancy). However this week things have been different: I have been having increased bloating, gas, returning of mild left/right pains and slightly softer stool (but still mostly formed). 2 days ago I noticed a thin string of white mucus in my stool and I just had diarrhea a few minutes ago (though I did eat some beef that was prepared with a lot of chillis so that might have explained the diarrhea).

I am not sure what to make of all this. My GI said that I had IBS, so perhaps this is it acting up?

Happends to me also when i use them.
Sherry's advice is same as mine. I also use a personal lubricant to avoid irritating my hemmy's and to help me push the thing up as long as possible.

Oh geez, so sorry Red. I haven't been feeling well these past few days so I was too quick to vent, i didnt mean to ignore you. Thanks for your advice. I was really relieved by your response! I thought that my difficulty in retaining the suppositories was an indication I was heading for a flare! Thanks for the comfort. Hope you are feeling well :-)

Yes, sounds like IBS..and possible food symptoms. But, even the slightest rectal inflammation can cause some symptoms to be exacerbated.

You're using the supps, so good...how often?

What you could do is ask the doc for antispasmodics to see if that helps. Do you still keep a food journal?

When are you off to China?

haha hope you'll be proud of me knowing that I have been in China (Shanghai) for over a month now hehe (was having second thoughts about studying in China after my UC diagnosis). It was because I came to China and had to stay in a hotel for the initial 2 weeks (meaning I had less control over my diet) so I ate more carbs and other things that were SCD illegal.

I don't keep a food diary anymore because my GI said I was focusing on my symptoms too much and he wanted me to stop thinking about my tummy altogether so I stopped the food and symptom diary :/

Before leaving Australia a brought a whole suit case full of medication (antispasmodics, Immodium, Pentasa, Salofalk, Colifoam, enemas, granules, supps, VSL #3 probiotics, Flagyl, sleeping tablets etc... literially a pharmacy in a suit case) so I am well stocked. I've got Buscopan and Buscopan Forte, not sure which one to use.

I am using the suppositories mostly every night, but trying to taper them down so I might skip a night every now and then.

Congratulations...time has gone by quickly! It's seems you've settled in well.

Happy to hear you're supplied with meds/supplements, etc...at least that's not a worry.

Since you do have the enemas, etc...tapering the rectals would be worth the try. I would suggest to not go lower than twice a week, however....just because.

The Buscopan is 10mg hyoscine and the Buscopan Forte is 20mg. I see the daily dosage of the 10mg is 6....but I'd probably try one before bedtime to see if that helps. You can adjust or increase with experience I would think. For bad days/nights...the forte would be more helpful rather than using the other prescription up.

I totally get the stopping the food journal....the fixation/micromanaging can be overwhelming. I burned mine..lol..very symbolic. Mind you, the journals were before diagnosis.

I see you're still on the flagyl..how long will you have to stay on it? Do you think that your improvements could also be from having the c.diff infection treated.

I'm also having issues with retaining suppositories as my UC has become more active at night.  last night I ran to the bathroom after 30 minutes. Put in Canasa again and retained it for 2 hours before having to run to the bathroom again.  It's a real waste of the drug!  I'm thinking maybe I can retain it for the recommended full 3 hours if I use it in the AM instead.

Does it make any different whether it's AM or PM as long as you get the full 3hours in?

P&H...no difference....if you can use both am and pm, that would be better.

What about using an antispasmodic before bedtime? that might help.

I know I've asked you this before...have you tried the enemas?

Maybe taking a half imodium an hour or 2 before bedtime could help.

I was on enema but since the UC is now only in my rectum area the doc switched to Canasa. Canasa is also 1000 mg compared to the enema which is only 60mg.

I've tried Immodium duirng the night but ti doesn't do anything for me and I know I can only take 4 within a 4 hour time period.  I can tell when I have to go...my stomach starts aching so badly.  It just builds and build and I get very naucous.

What is an antispasmodic?  I'm gona have to google that one.

Funny thing is I don't have the urgency to go until I lay down.  It's really starting to wear on my sleep..getting up 5-6 x a night!

The Rowasa.enema comes in either 2 g (2000mg) or 4 g (4000mg) in a 60 ml total amount of liquid. So, the supps have less medication in them. But, using them twice a day should be helpful.

is your urgency worse then you're laying in any particular position?

The antispasmodic I use is dicyclomine (bentyl in the US).

Thanks Q. I'm going to Urgent Care today. I'm so dehydrated. I only have 2 weeks of enemas left. Just checked the label, I have 4g in the enema.

Q: My c.diff diagnosis was actually a false positive... haha. So I took Flagyl for nothing grrrr....

I am in a bit of a panic state, this morning I noticed a small amount of blood on the toilet paper... I've been depressed the entire day. I think I had an anal fissure 2 weeks ago (as I had not been to the toilet for the whole day and I passed a really large stool. The blood from this fissure cleared up immediately after using Proctecdyl (?) hemmie cream and Pentasa suppositories). This morning I again passed a rather large formed stool and felt my anus stinging whilst passing it, I then wiped and noticed the blood (no blood in the stool and no mucus. Still some slight lower left and right abdominal pain that comes and goes). My GF had a look at the back and said I had a thin 'cut' leading into my rectum. I guess all I can do is wait for the next few days to see what happens.

P&H...wow, hope you're able to get help at the urgent care and back to feeling better soon.

MM..I agree it's a fissure...I have one too, and the proctocedyl with the suppositories will help. Be vigilent. I haven't been.

With the larger stool, add more of something you eat to loosen it a bit. Maybe more vitamin C if you take it...or more veggies

Hi Q. I just started a new post as I was prescribed both Lomotil and Bentyl.
Doing better on the dehydration side as I started drinking coconut water and water with electrolytes.
