Need to prep Sunday and was wondering if there any new and improved prep tips?

Oy. I dread this.

I liked the golytley, I chose the pineapple flavor. I had it really cold! I thought it was going to be horrible, because I was used to doing the miralax prep. My new doctor wouldn't let me use that one, so I was so nervous that I would not be able to swallow down all the golytley. Good luck!! Mind over matter that works too, pretend it is something you really love! I usually watch a movie during the prep to try to keep my mind off of the inevitable trips to the bathroom. It's been some years since I've used the Golytley, but in general what I've learned is to have the pre really cold, to use a straw and try to have the prep come in contact with the tongue toward the back of the tongue (less taste buds) and alternate with a popsicle or frozen something if the taste gets too bad.

Best of luck to you! I always remind myself there are worse things to deal with, and it's only one day I have to do this.....

You have to mix it the night before and put it in the fridge.
Don't forget!!!

Read the instructions first. Make sure you have a glass big enough to accommodate the required ounces.

I do not drink any flavouring or have one with flavering in it.

Definitely do a straw.
Keep the gallon in the fridge and put it back after you pour the glassful.

Pour the first glass, set the timer (you will need it so that you don't get fixated on the clock) for 10 minutes. This time will take some of the chill off...worst thing is brain freeze.

Straw as far into the mouth as you can and continue to drink all the liquid in the glass in one bout.

Pour the next glass...set the timer for 10 and go again....to be repeated...ugh.

If you cannot do the 10 minutes (maybe you're still in the bathroom?)...15 minutes is the longest you should do.

DO not sip....drink the whole glass in one go.

Stand up, don't sit for a few minutes. If you get stomach cramps or nausea...take slow breaths and hold your arms up above your head. Sometimes the diaphragm can spasm a bit from the cold.

You might feel chilled....understandable from the cold water...but you'll warm up after exercise of running to the toilet..lol.

I wipe the first few then dab the next after it's just liquid yellow stuff. Burns like hell.
I usually jump into the tub and do a warm hand shower...

Cetaphil on a wet toilet paper helps if you're not doing the hand shower.

After it's all "done"...you might have some yellowish stuff before bedtime and in the morning...normal .


DO NOT drink water throughout the night and if you need to take meds for whatever else except for UC...take a small amount of water.

Take your meds after the scope during your nice breakfast....

wow Q, that's some list!

I've taken my UC meds in the morning, would get pain back then if I didn't. Pretty sure it wasn't against Dr Rules.

sas - not sure if Dr would allow, just occurred to me, wonder if you could mix honey or Agave Syrup in with the drink, to make the taste more bearable

I always choose the GOLYTLEY. Once they gave me the small two drink thing and while I didn't need to drink as much, my stomach felt terrible, and in the morning I was still not empty. When I urgent paged the Dr on call, they said, oh, that's ok. we'll just vacuum the rest out. wow

wish you easy prep Stacy...I still remember fondly my lunch after my last Colonoscopy. Best Lunch Ever

I suggest NO flavouring unless it's specific to what's offered. It's usually artificial sweetener anyway.
I couldn't do a gallon of flavour...I tried one glass the very first scope 22 years...ugh..had the rest plain. At least I don't have flavour memory..lol.

The meds in the morning...could be good since they'd still probably be in the stomach during the scope.

That was what the first GI who I no longer see had me do. I think it tasted like the ocean. Than again this was 3+ years ago and we're talking recollection of a Scope Prep. I do recall dumping all of the the flavor paks in the bucket. I was trying to make it it like Kool-Aid. Um, it didn't work.

I don't believe I got the whole gallon down and I recall I kept gagging/puking it up in b/w bouts of crying, screaming, laughing with my parents. Fun Times :)
(Oh, my scope later the next day was a success tho, somehow)

The trick is the straw...don't take a breath in or you'll taste it on your tongue. If you have a problem with the taste, hold your nose while sucking it in.

Creating a taste with that experience......you will NEVER forget it! Even if I flavoured it like coffee or chocolate, I'd puke for sure. I would be sad if I ended up with an aversion to either of those two..lol.

The time limits are different. Depends on what your doc tells you. Years ago I used it in 10 minute intervals. Last month I did one and was to use it in 25 min intervals. I only had to use a little over half before it started coming out clear. When your bathroom trips become clear you can stop. I used a straw and mixed in some crystal light lemonade into it.

Thanks for the tips! I'll be drinking this at 4pm today. But looking forward to food tomorrow after 2 days of clear liquids! I hope I can get some popsicles to have with me.

     I always started my prep earlier than suggested only because it took me a lot longer to finish it...gag, barf..lol.

     What worked for me was having it very cold, drinking quickly through a straw and sucking on popsicles...clear ones.

     Had my colon and rectum removed last June, so no more colonoscopies...yaaa.  I wouldn't recommend having that done just to get out of colonoscopies though tongue .
