Have you ever been asked to step down from a project at work due to your medical condition?

I'm so furious right now.  My father recently passed away, I missed the funeral due to having to flu and being unable to travel, and my mom reprimanded me for not being there stating I should have been there even if I had to be put in a wheelchair!  Hence my UC has worsen and I'm suffering liquid D 6+ x a night and 24/7 digestive pain. I'm missing a conference today because of it.  Missing the conference prompted a co-worker to basically question my "dependability" on a volunteer project that hasn't even started yet.  He thinks I can "predict the future" and was told if I miss to many meetings I'll be pulled anyway!   Well I challenged him a second time around asking if he's asking this from all participates.  We'll he only asking this of me because of my condition!  Well doesn't everybody have a right to have a set back now and then?  Someone else could get sick or have car problems and not make it to the meetings and that's ok for them but not for me?  I told him it sound like he doesn't want me there. Well he finally changed his approach and mentioned about getting a backup which would make more sense and is more fair in case someone else was unavailable.   He only knows I have a condition, but not what it is. Sometimes you cannot conceal running to the restroom and the pain you feel.   Has anyone else experienced this and how did you handle it?  Also aren't we protected from such discrimination?   I'm starting to think it's best not to say anything about my health to anyone anymore. People just don't know how to react to chronic conditions.

ug, that's not good to hear. I had a similar situation with a colleague, she would order food for us and I would make special requests, in the board room one day she singled me out and wouldn't drop it subsequently. I responded to her privately and sent her a few URLs of videos and stuff, explaining I didn't choose this, I use to love pizza beer n ice cream etc etc, things are MUCH better now, and I get my special lunch without a bat of an eye. maybe you can talk to a supervisor? it sounds a bit unprofessional to me, i'm sure if he was sick you'd step up.
For me I've found the more friends I tell, the more calm I feel as I don't have to hide anything. Only you know whats best for you. Good luck peace&harmony, love that name btw.

One of my managers had a hard time understanding that some people have medical conditions. When I told her I wanted to take a few days off because I was starting to flare, she called me up and questioned me for hours. It only added to my stress. I should have just called in sick with the flu.

I have a hard time lying, but corporate culture requires what they call "diplomacy," which is really another name for lying.

Thanks everyone for your stories and emphathy.  I did talk to my supervisor and I wasn't satisfied with the "nuteral" outcome.  This is just the start of a series of events to come. I think what is missing is a policy on the project participation requirements and how to deal with absentism and/or late deadlines.

It's been my experience to nip these sort of things in the butt right away(sorry...no pun intended ).  I'm going to find out how to offically report the incident and work toward creating a policy that is fair for all vontuneers.

Before my surgery I was the top producer in my office but when I came back to work I was treated like the lowest person on the totem pole. After years of hard work I had newbies who were being treated better than me. My boss had an auto immune disease herself so you would think............I stayed and fought my way back up but I was always being looked at like I was sick. Finally, I chould not take it anymore and just quit.
