Thyroid problems and UC

I was just diagnosed with UC, and I also struggle with hyperthyroidism (graves disease). Does anyone else suffer and are they related?

I am not sure, but I was dx with Graves disease in 2001. I treated it with radioactive iodine, which then caused hypothyroidism. I was dx with UC in 2009. Not sure if they are related. They are both supposedly "autoimmune", so who knows.

Obviously I have ulcerative colitis and have had it for about 20 years.  I found out that thyroid disease runs rampant throughout my family.  about 65% of my relatives have hypothyroidism and take medication for it.  When I was figuring out what was going on with my immune system I found out I have antibodies to my thyroid in my blood (Hashimotos thyroiditis) but they have yet to do anything to my thyroid at present.  My TSH, etc. is normal. 

So I guess there could be a correlation.  I know many people who have uc have thyroid issues.  They are both auto-immune as we all know.

You might want to talk to Judy2. She's a UCer with Graves and a moderator of the thyroid forum.

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism in 2006 and have been on meds since for it. I was diagnosed with uc in march 2009. Interesting.

Thyroid was part of my recent 4 page bloodwork and it was all fine. I had wondered about that due to fatigue in and out of remission but I think that is just my lifestyle.
