Around two month ago I had a mild flare, with some bleeding and loose stool. Then my doctor prescribed Rowasa enemas. I am also taking three Lialda per day. The enemas really helped and for a couple of weeks I was in remission. Then I started decreasing the number of times I used Rowasa. Now I use it every other day. I’ve been doing this for about three weeks. Two days ago I noticed that the blood in my stool has reappeared. It is not a lot, however it makes me very nervous. Does this mean that the Rowasa has stopped helping? Should I increase my dose? Please, any advice will be helpful to me.

Hi,

Yes, I would increase the enemas to one daily, for at least two weeks. You can even use a Canasa suppository in the morning, to make sure that the rectum is protected. Do everything you can to avoid a full blown flare: increase probiotics, watch the food culrpits, drink a lot of water, whatever works for you normally.
Do not taper the enemas too quickly. If you tolerate them well, they will not harm you if used daily for a longer period of time.

Yes, just go back to nightly as suggested...see how all is at around 2 weeks, although I'd go longer. Then every second night.

I'm not a believer in that food will cause the bleeding, however.

Have you skipped any of the lialda or even any of the enemas?

Hang tough...this is NORMAL...

Quincy, yes I tried to skip my Lialda doses. I did it every other day, last week. Just tried to experiment and see what happens. I was starting to be UC symptoms free, but I guess that was too optimistic… Although I’m not sure if skipping the dose is what causes the bleeding. I will do as you guys suggested and get back on the enemas for two weeks. Hopefully it will help. It’s just I didn’t expect the bleeding to come back while I was on the enema. Why is it so hard to heal?

Figured as much...why would you skip the Lialda? What's the actual dosage ... 3?

Are you averse to taking the meds? Unfortunately, there is a commitment with taking them.

I'd suggest that if you can take the 5ASA meds, oral/rectal...faithfully...learning how to use the rectal meds effectively..they may work for you for a very long time.

Personally..I want to avoid any meds more than the 5ASA oral/rectal..forever.
