Hi, I am on sulfasalazine and I was just wondering, if I choose to get the enteric coated ones, if it works just as well as the non enteric coated?

The enteric coating protects your stomach more then the non. And as far as I know, it is still effective. Are you having stomach troubles?

I used to take the enteric coated and they worked fine..... but that was the only kind I took, so I have no comparison!

As Red said, the enteric coating should just protect your stomach some. it should dissolve lower in the GI tract and work just fine for the colon.

They are giving me a little acid reflux which is making me cough. I am not allergic to them, so that is not the case. I did read one of the side effects is stomach upset. I am taking these not only for UC, but my arthritis also. Thanks for your reply

I've taken sulfasalazine for 30+ years. I was given the non enteric coated ones a couple of times and they gave me really bad acid reflux and upset my stomach. I've never had any problems with the enteric coated ones.

I also took the en-tabs because my doctor thought they were necessary to prevent stomach upset. / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

Also on the enteric version with no side effects
