colon atrophy

HI

i just had a colonoscopy 3 days ago and the report said that i had a patchy atrophy in the middle colon. Also, there was a 11 mm polyp which had been removed and sent to the lab.

my appointment with the gastroenterologist is after 2 weeks and i cant waite to see the doctor and discuss the findings with me.

did any one here have a colon atrophy before? is the surgery is the only treatment for that? are they any dangerous side effects on the long term?

Try to stay calm and wait for your doctor's explanation of these findings. Ask him/her to clarify the "atrophy" notation for you. It should be interpreted by the endoscopist in the context of your scope/UC history. From my own gastroenterologist I learned that the UC colon can narrow and also shrink in length over time, and the mucosa tends to thin-- if any of this applies to your colon, it's not that unusual considering you've had UC for many yrs. Hi...hope the biopsy of the polyp is clear. Was that in the same area as the atrophy?

Atrophy..pretty much means loss of movement. But, that could be from continued inflammation or scarring. Definitely have it clarified when you go for your next appointment. Another possible cause for patchy atrophy could be ischemic colitis where the blood supply of that area is cut off or hindered.

I would suggest you do a bit of research on the patchy atrophy part and be resdy with questions so that you get clear answers. The only part about the research is some stuff can be scary possibilities, but to me...it's worth the info.

I know the 2 weeks will seem very long.

Did you have any other inflammation...you didn't mention that.

Make sure you get a copy of the pathology biopsy results.
