well, my GI asked me a question today that he has never asked me...since I've been dealing with all of this fistulotomy recovery, he asked how I felt I was doing mentally. It didn't really cross my mind till he mentioned it but I've had a lot of "why me" days during my recovery and many emotionally straining days trying to deal with the recovery which have really brought me down. We started me on Paxil for a month or a bit longer till this procedure heals. Has anyone else had to take it or any kind of anti depressants due to any kind of emotional strain related to their UC? This is the first time I've ever taken them and wasn't too sure what to expect.

I have been experiencing depression since my flare last year. I am trying Prestiq at the moment.

how long have you been on it? Does it feel like it helps?

Hi blksteeda,

I have family history of depression even before I was diagnosed with UC. I have taken Paxil along with a lot of others. I am currently taking Zoloft. The best one that I have been on is Lexapro, but unfortunately it is not on my insurance formulary and the co pay is $75.00 per month. I think that depression and UC go hand in hand for a lot of us.

How long have you had UC? How is the Remiade working for you, any side effects? I have a consultation with another gastro Dr. on 5/5/11 to discuss Remicade. When I have a flare up, my entire colon is affected, and I am unable to take any of the 5 ASA's (they increase my symptoms), 6mp gave me pancreatitis after 1 week, the enemas don't work either. The only thing that I can take to clear up my flares is prednisone, which is a really sucky drug.

Anyway, I hope the Paxil works for you and you start to feel better.

I've had UC for over 10 years now...as far as Remicade, I've been on it for about 1 year. It does work for me but it does tend to wear off before my next infusion. I get them every 6 weeks and around week 4 is when my symptoms gradually creep back in. I haven't had a colonoscopy since I was put on Remicade so I'm not too sure how well it's healing my colon. Sadly, Prednisone works very well for me to but it's caused other problems for me so I'm at the point I refuse to take it unless I'm in a severe situation. I just took a Prometheus blood test on Monday to see if I also have Crohn's so I'm going nuts at the moment waiting on the results.
