Hey all,
Been a while since I was last on the site, but am happy to post that as of early jan this year I'm back in remission...touch wood! Hopefully will last for a while! I've kept a journal since the start of the flare in July last year and I noticed that when I was put on Pentasa my Bm's reduced by half, but it wasn't until I started eating "normal" foods ie no special diets, just healthy foods, my Bm's dropped to 1 per day and no bleeding etc... The prednisone I was on for so many months caused me to have osteopenia in my lumbar spine, so thankfully no more steroids for me!
I was lucky to see Prof Borody in Sydney Australia a few weeks ago and spent an hour and a half talking to him about this horrible disease. He believes that it is a bacterial infection, this view is backed by Prof Michael Kamm, another colitis guru! They say they just need to find which bacteria is the culprit! I asked about diets esp the SCD, he says that although it has helped many people, diet alone is not a cure. Same said for probiotics.
Am returning to see him in a few weeks re fecal transplantation so will keep you posted.
He did also say a cure is possible and not far away! Very hopeful!

Interesting. I've always thought bacteria was the culprit for me too but it seems to have different causes for different people. Some people seem to have a clear link to UC genetically. What does he think about that?

Very interesting! Please keep us posted as to how it goes and how you do. I hope your remission lasts a long, long time!!

In regard to nssg's comment and question, certainly my UC does seem to have a genetic component - lots of relatives who had/have it, but my hunch is that the genetic tendency remained dormant until some trigger - a virus? who knows (I really don't remember, it was so long ago, and having been healthy, I wasn't paying attention to the details of my health....) triggered this imbalance that resulted in UC.
Because I respond so well to probiotics, I'd say I have a bacterial imbalance.

It's exciting to hear of progress, and it sounds as if Dr. Borody thinks we're making progress!

It certainly could be bacterial but nothing has been invented/discovered yet to eliminate that. I'm glad you got better but it took diet mod. to achieve my remission because nothing else including 10 years of mesalamine oral meds, steroids and antibiotics had any positive effect. Those bacteria are wily, I must've starved them out :-)

Good luck with your fecal transplantation, really hope it works for you. If I hadn't gotten into remission it would be top of my list of next things to try.

I totally believe it - it might be a new bacteria or an older one that was kept in check by the consumption of probiotic and prebiotic foods in the traditional diets.

Thanks for the positive feedback guys, it's very encouraging. NSSG, when I see the good Dr next, I'll ask him about genetic predisposition. This is truly a wretched illness and hopefully a cure is found soon, the Pasteur institute article was intersting!
I was told by 3 GI's including Prof Borody, that I should be on an immunosuppressant, so am biting the bullet this week and starting Imuran
sad Will be re-trying the SCD again too, even in remission, to try to keep a relapse at bay as long as possible!
