Just joined! Currently in the hospital and solomedrol not working too well.

Hello everyone,
I was searching through web about UC and landed here, luckily.

Diagnosed 3 years ago with UC and 3 days ago hospitalized for the 4th time due to high fever, A LOT of PAIN, of course bloody diarrhea.

Asacol worsens bleeding and fever apparently I don't know why so I've been on Pentasa.

Right now I'm on Pentasa(max dose), Solomedrol(switching to prednisone soon), Questran, Protonix.
I couldn't tolerate 6mp, Imuran(azathioprine) and remicade. Had allergic reactions and reactions like contricted chest with remicade infusion.

I'm not a fan of biologics or immunosuppressants but it seems like I'm left with Methotrexate and/or Humira(insurance wont cover it at the moment) and I know that some who couldn't tolerate 6mp or Imuran do/did well on MTX.

Any advices from the veterans or anyone?
I'm also willing to try the Low Dose Naltrexone but haven't asked the doctors about it because they haven't mentioned it.

Hospitals allowing me solid foods and ensure for weight gain. Solids foods with restricted fiber diet seems to worsen my mucous/bloody diarrhea though.
Should I stick with just liquid?

I really don't know what to do for now. :(

I am sorry you're stuck in the hospital. I have heard of people having success with MTX but I don't think the success rate is too high for UC, it's higher for Chron's as far as I know. It is really difficult when you're unable to tolerate the medicine available because there really is limited treatment for UC.

Are you using rectal meds at all?

Have you tried any diets or natural approaches to keep your UC at bay? (I've tried a few and unfortunately I am not one of the lucky ones who have results from diet modification) on the other hand, I am thankful that I am able to tolerate most of the medication I've tried.

LDN could be a good option but I doubt they would prescribe it in the hosptial. It's not easy to get a prescription for LDN, you have to seek out doctors who are using it, ones who are unfamiliar seem to shy away from learning about it or prescribing it.

Have you done research on worms?

Have you been checked for C. Diff or other infections or bacteria? If you have a bacteria, it can make UC more difficult to treat.

Have you looked into j-pouch surgery? It's not something you have to rush into but I think it's a good idea to familiarize yourself with the procedure in case nothing works. You can live a long, healthy, med-free life without a colon.

Do you take probiotics?

Thanks for the reply, notsosicklygirl. Yep it's more common with the CD patients but im sort of out of options with other meds.
Yepp. I'm on Canasa?? Suppositories every night.

Well, i tried scd almost two years ago and wasnt too successful.
I have trouble tolerating chicken for some reason. I dont know why. I can digest other types of meat fairly well but chicken is one of the culprit food for me. Tried juicing veges and landed in the hospital in 2009.

I took dr. Clark's meds for worms(tincture) and did not work. And for the infections, they took samples of my stool for c diff as usual but my white count is normal so the doctors doubt that i have an infection.

Antibiotics make me flare hard. Any including cipro or flagyl. Even Zosyn and avelox caused flareups too :(

I need to play around with food more i guess. Even the puddings with artificial ingredients hurt me.
