I was just diagnosed with ulcertive proctitis on May 23 after colonoscopy.  My symptoms were blood and mucous with bm. 

The doc put me on cortifoam for 10 days 2 times a day and 21 days thereafter at night and asacol 2 pills 3x a day.

It has been about 3 days now since I have done my pills and cortifoam and I don't know how long it will be before I see any improvement in the blood or mucous.  I really do not have a problem with bm, I only go once in the morning and otherwise it does not bother me throughout the day and that has not changed either.

I am kind of impatient to know when I might see any results if anyone could enlighten me it would be appreciated.

Also I really want to know that I am getting the best medical treatment for my condition and do not know if I went to another maybe better doc if he might give me other options for this disease.  Is this the regimen that everyone else has done.  I only went to this doctor because he was recommended by my primary physician, but since I live in the wonderful city of Boston where my doctor options are multiple, I wonder if I should go to another doctor for my condition.

I do appreciate anyone writing me back.  I am so upset over this whole thing and can hardly concentrate on anything else.

I have UP and rowasa enema's (you retain them) cleared me up in days.

Hi...I think you should call the doc or go back and request to get on the Rowasa retention enemas.

Hi Carol,

I'm also newly diagnosed with UP. This whole ordeal has been emotionally devastating for me so I know what you're going through. I'm currently using Rowasa enemas. It has gotten rid of the symptoms within a few doses. I was on cortenemas but they didn't really help me. I'm almost finished with the Rowasa enemas now. I'm seeing my GI doc on Tuesday so I don't know what will be next. Since I'm still new to this too, I'm pretty confused as to what the normal treatment is. I don't understand why some people go on oral medications on a regular basis if they just have proctitis because from what I'm reading, oral medications don't reach that far down.

I live in NC now, but I'm originally from NY and I lived for a while in New Hampshire. I've been to some of those Boston hospitals. You're very lucky to live in that area. Great hospitals and great doctors. You're right. You have a lot of options as far as doctors go. Although I haven't hated my current GI doctor, I am planning on seeing another GI for a second opinion. This new guy specializes in IBD's. I feel in some ways that my current GI has let me down by not really explaining things well to me. The last time I went in for an appt and had a few questions, he told me I was exhausting him with my questions. I tried to explain to him that when someone drops a bomb on you and tells you that you have a lifelong illness with no cure, you're bound to have tons of questions. Although I understand there is no cure in conventional medicine yet, I feel strongly about exploring other options like diet and alternative treatments. I can't accept that there is no cure. Right now, my diagnosis isn't conclusive on the biopsy, which in my mind, means that it hasn't progressed that bad yet. I feel like I need to get a plan together and my GI needs to get a plan together so that this won't get worse and in the future go up my colon more.

For now, I just bought some guided imagery CD's. One is specifically for IBD, one is for healthy immune systems and one is a positive affirmation CD. It might seem silly to some that I'm listening to this. But to me, it can't hurt. I think IBD is one of many disorders that's greatly affected and brought on by stress. Even if I can't "cure" my IBD, I can better manage my stress with the relaxation of these guided imagery CD's.

I was diagnosed back in January this year and tried 3 different medications- Lialda, sulfasalazine enemas, and mesalamine enemas. All of them worsened my condition so I decided to read up on natural treatments.

Chrissy, I also refuse to believe that I'll be living this miserable way forever. Since stopping my medications in March, I've been trying different techniques and ways of eating. Everybody is unique so you just have to experiment. I found that Aloe Vera Juice (4 oz a day) has been my saving grace. I only started taking it not even 2 weeks ago and my bleeding is almost gone. I was bleeding heavily from September 2010-May 2011. My external hemorrhoids and pilonidal cyst are also gone as well- both of these caused me a lot of discomfort.

You should look into Ayurveda, too. Deepak Chopra's book "Perfect Digestion" is all about how each physical impulse has a mind impulse and vice versa. I started doing his breathing techniques and have cut my bathroom visits in half. I was going 20-30 times a day and now it's down to maybe 10. I also like Jini Patel Thompson's "Listen to Your Gut" website. She has so much great, FREE, info on how she treated her U.C. and her videos on Youtube are great. Belly massage has helped me SO much. She also emphasizes a diet with about 30-40% calories from fat. Before, I was eating maybe 5% a day from fat, but I've upped it to her recommendations and it has basically made me sane again.

Just try out different things and never stop reading and researching about this disease. There's always new things you'll discover, and hey, some might not work, but you never know until you give it a chance.

Hi Carol,
I was diagnosed with proctitis in Jan 2011. I was like you feeling impatient, because I had been bleeding with mucos mixed in with my bowels for seven months. My GI had me on Rowasa and asacol.
