This morning I had my 12th colonoscopy and second upper endoscopy. I told the nurses in the beginning that I needed the largest dose of sedative as possible because I tend to wake up. She looked back at my record, saw this was true and got more of the drug.
She had to put 6-7 viles of the drug in me before I went out. I remember at about the 3rd dose, I asked how soon I would be going out. She was surprised I was still alert. At the 5th dose, she asked what I did for a living. I very coherently responded that I worked in accounting at a large mortgage firm. At dose 6 she asked how the industry was doing. I told her it was very slow.
I think dose 7 knocked me out.
However, I soon woke up and asked if we were done. Shocked, the doctor and nurse said they were done with the colonoscopy, but they still needed to do the upper endoscopy. I think they gave me another shot. But I woke up again soon after. The doctor put a circle rubber thing in my mouth and told me to bit down on it.
I guess they couldn't give me any more sedative, so I was awake for the entire procedure! I felt the tube going down my throat and I was crying because it hurt so bad and I was gagging and coughing. The doctor kept telling me not to move and to try to swallow. I couldn't.
It was one of the worst experiences of my life!! I never did go back to sleep. I was awake when they finished, I was awake when they wheeled me to recovery, and I was awake the whole time after that. I think I shocked everyone there.
I don't know how I am going to get through next year's exams.
And this is not unusual for me. At the dentist, they know they have to give me the maximum dose of novocaine, because I blow through it VERY fast. During my two back surgeries, the anethesists were shocked that the level of anthesia they have given me hadn't put me out, and they have had to give me much more. I think the reasons for this is either my red-hair (I've read studies) or the fact I have anxiety.
I just wish they had done the upper endoscopy on me first, then maybe I would have been asleep through it.
