I was diagnosed about a month ago with Ulcerative Colitis and put on 4 lialda every morning and a canasa suppository at night. Yesterday I went back for a follow up and since I have had no noticeable change was put on 20mg prednisone as well as the lialda and canasa. Just wondering what I can expect to be feeling like with all these new medications. I'm torn because I have been planning a trip (a 6 hour car ride) for this weekend for months and not sure if I should just cancel now or if I should expect the prednisone to help quickly enough to be able to travel.

Hi redrox,

It is my experience that prednisone work pretty well, especially with new UC'ers. When I started using meds, prednisone bit in 3 to 4 days - no diarrhea, no blood, etc. In a few days I felt like I could run a marathon after working in a mine for a week.

You still have a couple of days left. If the meds don't work well, make your decision.

Hi..what were your symptoms that you didn't improve from being on the Lialda and suppositories?

It's unfortunate that the doc didn't put you on mesalamine retention enemas initially.

I would suggest you take a half imodium to help you through your car ride....

The pred may have kicked in by then and you'll get some relief.

You might also consider to split the Lialda and take 2 in the morning and 2 at night.

Where exactly is your UC...throughout or limited?

I have left-sided colitis and I was still having many (10 to 15) episodes of diarrhea a day with blood and it was getting to the point where I no longer felt I could leave the house because I was just so scared I would have to go to the bathroom and quickly. On my last visit the GI this week they did give me a prescription for rowasa enema, but I still need to go pick it up. Maybe that will work better. I have had a very good morning today and I hope that it is the prednisone kicking in. Thank you for the suggestions.

Go get the Rowasa...it would be absolutely best if you don't have to up the pred.

Don't put your life on hold because of UC. I travel every chance I get, even if it means having to go to the bathroom in "unauthorized" places. Life is too short to stay home.
