Issues with Mezavant??

My GI recently switched my meds from Pentasa to Mezavant.  Not sure it's working well for me.  Although I feel genuinely well,  I still get the urgency to go to the bathroom, I am extremely gassy and of course, still have bleeding.  Does anyone know how to combat these issues? Are you taking something with mezavant? I have not had complete remission in 2 years and I am getting very frustrated.

Welcome to HW.

Sorry to hear about your problems. It really sucks if one does not get into remission ever.

People's experiences with meds vary very much. There are plenty of mezavant posts on this forum. Use the search function.

"These issues" are battled with diverse ways. Read the forum.

Hopefully you'll get the rights meds soon and get better.

You need to get on a rectal med as well....it's what I would always suggest based on experience as well as a logical way to treat UC.

I'd suggest the 5ASA mesalamine retention enema. Are you in Canada or the UK or other?

Where exactly is your UC...throughout or limited?

How much Pentasa were you on and how much mezavant?

That makes good logic quincy, thank you.  I have tried every enema there is out there and it seems to make things worse for me.  I am currently taking 2 mezavant twice daily, 125mg of cyclosporin twice a day and 5mg of prednisone.  My family doctor suggested limotil for the urgency of bm's, but my GI does not recommend it.  that is really the only problem I have, I can live with the other issues.  are you on a special diet as well?

2 Mezavants are just maintenance dose, treatment dose is 4. my Doc did intially tell me to drop to 2 when he prescribed prednisone but after a month not having Pred working we went back up to 4 and I stayed at 4 for months.

I eventually even split the dose 2 in am and 2 in pm when i still had frequency cause to it made no sense tome to take 4 and eliminate it quickly... so i figured by splitting it had more chance of staying in my system between BMs.

I think the split dose and the mesalamine enemas nightly really finally did the trick after a year long flare and 8 months of prednisone....

Studies have shown that 4 mezavant doesn't work any better then 2. I went on 4 for a while just in case but it didn't do any different then 2.
I found the mezavant worked better then the salofalk. I did find it took a few months to make a difference tho.

gloworm..were exactly is your UC...throughout or limited?

What exactly were the enemas you used and what was the process in using them?

You're tapering pred..that in itself can cause issues...

I think I might also be having issues with Mezavant?

I was taking Salofalk and then Pentassa 2g per day with no problems. I then went to see my new GI who wanted to do a fresh Colonoscopy on me which I agreed to. He could see some inflammation and put me on 40mg of Pred to "clear the inflammation", tapered by 5mg per week.  He also changed my Pentassa for Mezavant 2.4g per day.

I was largely OK all the time on the Pred, apart from a burning / indigestion feel and some numbness in the fingers.

I finished the Pred taper on Monday, and am now just on the 2.4g of Mezavant.

On Tuesday I appear to have started flaring with multiple BM's and loose mucusy stools and abdominal tenderness.

Any idea what the cause is, could it be the Mezavant?  I was OK before taking the Pred / Mezavant.
