still in flare up about a week and a half, in that time I lost 20lbs, which really makes me mad since I was hitting the gym hard . I was 265 then two days ago I was 243. I gained five back up to 248. On prednisone and azathiprine. 40 mg prednisone. I was on lialda, but can't afford, no insurance, is there a drug that does the same thing as lialda that is cheaper? I have been using immodium which completely shuts down the "D". I have stopped drinking which I also think accounts for about 10lbs since the little beer pouch I had is gone. Is immodium bad to take?

I believe there may be a prescription assistance program for Lialda. Go to their website to see or maybe someone else will chip in. I know there was an assistance program for Asacol HD (same med basically). Also, sulfasalazine is the cheapest 5-ASA, as long as you don't have sulfa allergies. Give your doctor a call and explain your situation. They may have free samples they can give you or they may be able to help you find assistance programs.

Immodium is generally not reccommended for people with UC if you are in a bad flare-up...check with your doctor before taking this. It can lead to something called toxic megacolon. In some cases, it's ok to take it...my doc actually wrote me a prescription for it when I was just mildly flaring (no blood), but I never ended up taking it.

Hi Pooped and Tired,
I called the company who makes Lialda (Shire Pharm) and I got a card that makes my prescription of Lialda for the month $10. I have insurance but I was still able to get this card. Call them and ask them for the Lialda discount card. Good luck!
