wellbutrin SR and ulcerative colitis

i have been reading about taking wellbutrin to help with crohns disease because it lows TNF etc

alot of the threads i have read said that you take the " immediate release" medication.

in australia only "sustained release" is available

is this worth taking to help with crohn's/colitis symptoms?

I have seen this also but my understanding is that Welbutrin has the same anti-TNF properties as Remicade but, like Remicade, cannot survive the digestive process.

I've tried Wellbutrin in the past but not for my Uc. However, when I did take it, it did nothing to help my Uc - instead it made me an emotional wreck (couldn't stop crying for 2 weeks) so I had to stop it.

Wow Sherry....not a good side effect at all...how long did it take you to level out after taking it?


Anthony...I wonder why the immediate release would be better than the other? I would still try it in a low dosage if I were you...to start anyway.

I bet! I seemed to have that reaction over a period of time from using the zopiclone sleep med. Now that I'm off it for a while, things are more normal...it was a bad place to be.

AnthonyV- There are a few people that are taking it on the Crohn's board. I saw you posted there so they should be along shortly. From what I can remember, they have had good luck with it.

I have spoken to some members on the Crohn's board who were using Wellbutrin with success. I asked my GI about using it for UC and she didn't seem too hopeful. I would defintiely try it if I had the opportunity.

I started a round of Wellbutrin and it shot me so high, and created such stress, that I believe it worsened a flare in the making. Stopped it after three days and be then a flare was in full force.

A great weight loss med, but too much of an upper.

I just started Pristiq and I feel like my whole perspective is better. I am much less of a worrier. It's wonderful. My UC even seems like it has improved, maybe from not worrying so much.

well everyone in the crohn's board seems to say you need to use the immediate release. but what i'm asking is why?

does the SR not lower your TNF like the immediate release? no-one seems to know

only the SR is available to me here in australia

Anthony, I have ordered drugs from outside the country. I am sure if you want to get it, you can find a way. If you hae a prescription for Wellbutrin, a pharmacy should be able to fill it with whatever you ask for. The problem is the out of pocket costs.
