Had remission no meds for 10 years. Flare april 40 prednisone taper till end of May. Flare came back in August tried to treat with 20 mg and cortisone enema and Asacol). So much pain today I bumped up to 40 to strat 5 day taper. Just took a chlordiazepoxide-clidium cap because i am out of sleepin med and did not need on 20. This is the worst. Was hospitalized in 2000 with horrible flare that was managed on too low of a dose so I freaked at the thought of that. Diagonosed in 96 UC. Wondering if I should have stayed on low dose like 10mg to maintain remission. Rambling and miserable

I ALWAYS took ALL of my dose in morning. Never in evening. More effective earlier too. Maybe change timing if you are doing a later dose?

I second taking the entire dose in the morning. When I split the dose, I didn't sleep at all.
I don't think it is a good idea to stay on even a low dose of pred for maintenance. It is not meant to be used as a maintenance drug only to help induce remission in combination with some other maintenance med. Have you tried using mesalamine enemas like Rowasa?

I always took pred in the morning but I was unable to sleep regardless. I had to use Ambien or another sleep aid to get any rest. Staying on prednisone longterm has very bad effects on your body. I definitely wouldn't even consider it an option. There are a lot of other medications that are much safer for longterm use.
There is a post on the top of the main page of the forum here called "Resources". There's a post in there that goes through a lot of the treatment options. You should take a look to get an idea of what's out there.
Welcome to HW. I hope you're feeling better soon.

Take it in the morning and if you still have problems, ask your GI for Ativan to take at night.

The eariler in the am you take all your pred, the better chance you will have sleeping at night. Good luck!!

We were told not to take more than 20 mg of Pred at one time because it could dangerously increase your blood pressure. My daughter always took divided doses when she was on Pred. She used Melatonin for a while and then convinced herself it caused her to flare. Ativan worked for a while but Trazadone was the most helpful with getting her back on a normal sleep schedule.

I am on 40 mg of Pred right now and feel great, other than sleep deprivation. I am not suffering the night sweats that I did a year ago with Pred though. I am going on night 3 of no real sleep, just 15 min cat naps. I shut my eyes only to be wide awake 15 min later. I am taking my entire dose first thing in the morning also, I just think this is how it affects me. I have been taking a .25 Xanax but I dont think its strong enough to keep me sleeping so tonight, it's a warm bath an a full .5.
Wish me luck!

Nothing solved my sleeping. If it wasn't the prednisone keeping me wide awake it was the constant trips to the bathroom at night. I didn't sleep for months, not a wink.
Pain killers worked some, because they relaxed me, got rid of pain, and also slowed my bowel down at night.

Klonipan helped me. Also a supplement known as ZMA -- google ZMA and sleep. Maybe it can help you, but I did nto take it on pred.

Honestly, the sleep depriviation, how good I feel, the big appetite, the loss of my facial wrinkles, my feeling of happiness, having 2 formed bowel movements a day.... it's all worth it to me. Prednisone may be a horrible drug but it's been a salvation to me.
It's like happiness in a bottle (but probably with big effects later) but I am being Scarlett O Hara... " I will worry tomorrow"

Trying to bring back this thread. I took 40 mg of pred in the am and I am wide awake and it's midnight! I can't stop moving and can't relax. I even took two bebedryl and nothing. I have to be up in 5 hours and it's going to be a long day without any sleep. Suggestions? It's one horrible situation of living in the bathroom or another horrible situation of living without sleep. Right now I don't want to take my morning pred dose. If I only took it one day do I still need to taper? I'm miserable either way.

Prednisone insomnia sucks you might need a prescript
ion sleep aid temporarily.

Ugh- I've never had to take a sleeping aid before! I usually can't do Tylenol pm or anything bc it causes the reverse reaction for me. Never took a xanax or anything. Did call the doc for a sleep aid- not sure if she'll approve but I don't see why not.
I almost fee like the not being able to sleep isn't as bad as the DESIRE to sleep! Torture! Hoping to see an improvement with the pred within the week.

I called the doc and they told me it's just a side effect and unfortunately I'll have to deal. If I want a deep aid, I'll have to call my primary. I don't mind calling my primary and I'm sure she'd scribe something, but what's bothering me now is that the doc prob thinks I'm being annoying. Last time I was on flagyl I called for stuff to help with nausea - it was horrible. He was fine with that and he always seems nice. But this time he had the nurse practitioner call and she was like - I talked to him and he said no.
Last night I took a trazadone I had from a while back and it worked beautifully but I don't wanna take that without asking first. Should I call my primary?
Also, doc said on Mon he would have his staff schedule a scope for me soon so we can see what's going on. And it's now Thursday and I haven't heard. Again, I hate to call back, but I'd rather do the procedure sooner than later so he can get in there and see what's going on before it heals over. He says he's going to be able to stage where I'm at no matter when he looks. Do I call back and annoy them again tomorrow, maybe, if I don't hear anything ?

My husband has been on trazodone to help with sleep to do prednisone-induced insomnia. He had tried Benadryl but it didn't work. Trazodone is a very commonly used drug and while you can check with doc to put your mind at ease, I don't think you need to worry about
using it in the interim if your doc had previously thought it was ok to prescribe.

I'm 30 mg a day I take in morning. I sleep good enough. Makes me wake up to pee but I usually go right back to sleep.

Lucky Jars05! I never had this problem before being on pred, even when I was on 60mg before , it didn't cause insomnia like this. Super thirsty, increased appetite, and puffy knees and hands. All par for the course I guess.
I did call the doc and they called in a low dose of Ambien. Trying it out tonight.
