Insurance wants me to use generic Rowasa...I don't know what to think!

Hi all:

I went to the pharmacy to pick up my Rowasa and they told me that my insurance wants me to start using generic.  This freaks me out!!

So...do I try to call the insurance company and plead my case?  Do I just use the generic?  Does the generic even work as well?

I don't know why I'm so worried...I'm beside myself really!  I guess b/c I'm doing so well right now I really don't want to mess with anything.

Please leave your comments, I'd appreciate it!!

I use a generic mesalamine enema and I like it just fine. I especially like that it costs me $10 for 28 enemas.

Is it a $10 copay?  That does sound nice!

It seems as though I've read that the generic have something in them that is irritating, but now I can't find the post.

Anyone?

Oh, and how many generics are there?  Are there better or worse ones?  I'm in the USA, I don't know what the generic is called.

Generic enema is fine. Can't wait til Asacol goes generic...

I use generic enemas from perrigo. They seem to work well and I haven't had any adverse reactions. I pay $10 for a months supply. I thinkk the name brand would cost me $20. I don't see a point in spending the extra 10 on the name brand.

Generic enemas have helped keep me in remission for over two years now! Just make SURE THEY ARE NOT GAVIS brand!!!! They have rough tips, and might have played a role in the perianal abscess I developed. The Perrigo brand is what I normally use and they are great.

You all are making me feel so much better!  For some reason I had in my head that the generic enemas were not good...I must have just gotten one post stuck in my head!!

It would be nice for them to be cheaper...even with my insurance they are $50 for a month's worth.  I know it could be worse but if the generic work just as well for less that would be great!

Hey Calm,

I use the Perrigo too and am fine.  I also like Teva but they have been hard to get. The Perrigo plastic is a little harder to squeeze but besides that I have no complaints.  I didn't like the Gavis either...they just didn't seem to work as well.  I think it should be fine w/ the generic.  Keep us posted!

You should try them! They worked fine for me. Sometimes people are bothered by the inactive ingredients but you'll never know if that's an issue for you until you try and the $10 co-pay is a lot better on the pocket book. :o)

I would be elated to get generic Rowasa (mesalamine). I just found out that my community insurance plan does not cover Rowasa.

I pay $50/month for the Perrigo brand....
