Anyone just have this procedure as opposed to a Colonoscopy-

GI thinks my hubby may have proctitis based on his symtpoms and feels this will help start a plan asap-

 

He did have a colonscopy 3 years ago that was ok

I guess based on what they see today they can always take a deeper look another time but at least start him on some enemas/suppositories

to start dealing with the blood and inflammation.

 

I may just know why my daughter developed UC now :((((((((

I've had numerous sigs over the years in addition to the colonoscopies. There really is no prep for a sig other than 2 fleet enemas about 2 hours before the procedure. Most docs don't use sedation and it's tolerable. Not something I want to do every day though! lol

I have had more sigs than colonoscopies. No biggie. "Uncomfortable" but not painful. It usually only lasts for 5 min or so.

I have had some with no prep at all, and other where I used tap water enema - just depends on your doc.

Sig results...most likely proctitis- biopsies sent
treat with Rowasa enemas

Does that sound right?

I had the same exact result from my first sig. I treated mine with Canasa nightly and it helped a lot. My proctitis did eventually spread to become UC although my GI said it is pretty rare for it to spread. Rowasa sounds like a good option to me. I hope it works well for him. Does he have a lot of symptoms or is it mild?

Inflammation about 7 inches up- some ulceration I believe
He started with some bleeding, mucus, cramping and a bit more frequency-plus
an especially loud tummy!

Rowasa for 4 weeks nightly and then that is it...does that seem ok
or should you stay on the Rowasa always?

I had one once while flaring and it was extremely painful and it made my flare worse. Will not go through that again.

I'm not sure. I know for UC I stay on Rowasa for maintenance. I taper down to once a week.

My first scope was a sig. In fact, my colon was so inflamed that my GI could only get far enough in to give me a diagnosis so that he could prescribe pred. I used two fleet enemas.

The next time, he wanted to check the whole colon; so he did a colonoscopy. Again, I just used two fleet enemas. Everyone else on this forum thinks that's a ridiculous idea though.

So anyway, it really depends on the purpose of the scope and how far down the inflammation is. If you only need a scope to get a diagnosis and the flare is in the left side before the first turn, then a sig should be enough.

It depends on how he responds to the Rowasa whether or not he should continue. Some people do well and go into remission with a few blips here or there and others need constant medication.

IBDISTHEPITS - my first scope was a sigmoidscope which found proctitis. Rectal meds are very effective, but if there is inflammation past the sigmoid colon, enemas are not going to help. I'd really recommend a full scope; maybe after a few weeks on rectal meds your husband can see how he's feeling and then decide.

I think the doc should set him up for a c-scope anyway within the next few months.

Yes, the prescription is good, but if he has any further inflammation besides the rectum...that should be noted for sure.

UC is diagnosed through a list of elimination, so good the biopsies were done and a treatment for now given.

When does he go back for the results?

Results confirmed Ulcerative Proctitis-
plan still is to stay on Rowasa enema for 4 weeks.

My question...is it necessary to use rowasa preventatively to keep
further problems away? Maybe like 2-3 week?

If the Rowasa puts him into remission do you just go med free until the next flare?

Thoughts would be appreciated-

I can't see how it would be wise for him to NOT be on Rowasa and/or Canasa for maintenance. I mean, the last thing you want is for proctitis to turn into pancolitis due to no meds.

I've been using enemas for maintenance and treatment of flares since 2007. I would think it would be good for him to be on a maintenance med but I'm not a doctor.
