Since losing Tobi, my cat, I was questioning if I should get a tattoo. Maybe her paw prints. Would it be alright since I'm on Imuran to get a tattoo?

Sorry for your loss, Sibby. I recently lost my 19 year old cat also. I have her paw print tattooed on my foot. She loved to rub up against my feet :)

I don't have any experience with Imuran, sorry.

It's totally fine, I've gotten many tattoos while on Imuran. They healed up same as any other ones I got prior to being on any meds. Sorry for your loss- funny though, us cat lovers- I have 2 cats, & one is getting older fast- I often think of getting her name tattooed on me after she goes! And I already have 1 cat tattoo...

My best Boxer girl Stella is ten and I want her name on the inside of my ankle. I have it all designed just afraid to get it. I'm afraid I'll get Hep C. Am I crazy for thinking that?

I wouldn't worry about if you go to a credible place that is very clean. I MADE them show me their autoclave and I watched them open all the sterile needles.

UC, thank you :) Toots used to sleep down near my ankles. I thought I'd get her paw prints since I said to her she left hers all over me before she died.

Eva, I totally agree. Cat lovers are certainly unique. I'm glad I can get it though. I was concerned about the healing process, and such.

Sally, I have a design of what I would like. They made paw prints after her death. I thought that would be nice. Nothing too big, but not sure where though. It'd be my first one. Just be careful when you're dealing with a parlour. The risk is minimal, but still, ask for the paper work and watch them.

Calla, can you explain how it goes? What tips I should follow? I have no clue what I'd be doing. They have autoclave in Canada, right?

It's the ink I wonder about. Do they use new ink for everybody or dip in the same stuff?

What they did for me was place all of the needles out on a plate, still sealed. The guy drew the design on my foot with sharpies, which he gave to me because he could no longer use them because it would it wouldn't be sanitary. I don't remember the ink part of it but I'm fairly certain they don't use the same ink over and over.

An autoclave is a machine that pressurizes steam to sterilize instruments. I'm sure that they have them in Canada. Not every tattoo shop uses them that's why I say go to a credible place that uses an autoclave.

Tattoos can cause infections, but usually the infections are local. I got a second ear piercing even though I get infections easily. I put antiseptic on it a lot for about six weeks and it healed OK. Can you put antiseptic on a tattoo?

Sally, they don't use the same ink. I may have never gotten a tattoo, but I was always asking questions whenever my friends got them, lol.

Question, would the tattoo hurt any if I got it near my ankle?


Subdued, antiseptic can be too harsh for the tattoo.

Generally, the pain is greater from a tattoo if there isn't much fat in the area. So a tattoo on the foot/ankle would hurt more than a tattoo on the stomach. Autoclaves are a standard piece of sterilization equipment found in hospitals, nearly all laboratories, etc, and I'd run far away from a tattoo parlor that didn't have one. They have big bottles of ink, and squirt what they will need for the tattoo into little cups, which get thrown away after the tattoo is done. When I got my tattoo, they gave me a new tube of Neosporin ointment to use on it for a week or two.

I have two, both while on 6mp. One on my ankle and one on my shoulder. The one on my ankle hurt worse than my shoulder one. It took a little longer to heal as well. I only had a very small portion of my tat that got infected but it was a small one (on the very tip of the wing on my butterfly). Paw prints are pretty straight forward and shouldn't cause you issues. That's very sweet that you want your kitties paws on you - I'm sorry you lost her.

I have one on the top of my foot. It hurt but I could tolerate it.

I got a tattoo on my 18th birthday and it was fine. Got a little flakey and peeled, but it still looks great. The one thing you'll need to mention is that you are on Imuran, some meds (like 6mp) can make colors less bright and such. I was told I might need touch-ups more often and that I had to use bright colors.
It didn't hurt that much, kinda just like being slapped. In my opinion, with all we UCers go through, a tattoo needle isn't much =P

Thanks Sherry :). Since she left a part of herself with me, I thought paw prints would be a nice touch.

Book, I would only do the tattoo in black. Nothing to fancy, just the image of the paw print and probably her name. I would have to touch that up eventually, right? Or would it be necessary if the tat was all in black?
