Hi,

I have been diagnosed with UC in 2005. At that time the colonoscopy showed only the rectum so it is very mild. I had another colonoscopy in 2008 and everything came normal. I haven't had any flares since 2007 or any symptoms of any kind. I am on Asacol 1600 mg per day, maintenance doze.

Now, I just had my routine colonoscopy done today and the diagnoses says "ileitis". I could not find any clear information about it. The doctor did not talk anything with me after the procedure and I am stressed about it. Does anyone know what "ileitis" means? Can it be related to UC? Can it be just temporary? Should I worry about it?

Crohn's ileitis is a type of Crohn's disease affecting the ileum, a portion of the small intestine. But you need to ask your GI if your condition means that you have IBD, Crohn's or UC. Is it possible to have a temporarily inflamed ileum and not have IBD? If you don't have any symptoms then maybe you can continue on as you have been doing.

At least find a doctor who can provide answers to your questions.

I never had any sympthoms of Chron's disesase or even any of my UC that is why I am worried about this "ileitis" diagnosis. No pain, no mucus, no bloody stools and I know how it feels because I've been there. My feeling is that I might have a inflamated ileum just because of the Miralax and only fluid diet prep that I had to do for the whole day yesterday. I am always afraid of this prep before colonoscopy...... I am afraid of iritating my colon. I left a message with the doctor to call me. I am very scarred.

Ileitis is like Babe saidk, inflammation in the ileum. While it seems unlikely to be caused by UC, I have seen people on this forum talk about inflammation that high in the bowel as kind of an overflow of pancolitis. Was there inflammation anywhere else?

If not, what's probably going to happen is you'll have a conversation with your doctor about Crohn's being a better fit rather than UC for a diagnostic label. But IMO, they're both IBD and you approach treatment essentially the same way.

The doctor that did the procedure is not a GI specialist. On the release paper there is no other diagnoses then ileitis. I have been diagnosed with UC not Chron's and only in the rectum and since my last colonoscopy in 2008 (everything was super normal then) I had no flares or any kind of discomfort. That is why I am so worried how this can be possible whithout any sympthoms.

Okay. The doc called me and he said not to worry about it. He saw a little redness on the ileum, nothing else on the rest of the colon, and the biopsy will tell us more..... meaning if my physician will need to adjust my meds or not. He also told me something that I did not know, UC can appear in different places different times. My impresion was that it will go from the rectum up. This is not a good thing though from my point of view but I cannot do anything about it so..... as long is not going to get to cancer I am not going to complain about it, there are people suffering much more.
It is great to have a forum like this to get all out, all the worries and to feel that you are not alone.

Yeah.....I don't agree with the UC can appear different places part except there is one form of UC where the cecum and rectum are involved, but no where else between.

If your cecum is NOT involved, I'd go more with the CD diagnosis.

CD in early stages can mimic UC....

Ileum inflammation can happen with backwash, but that's with pancolitis, not with what you have.

Do you have a copy of the biopsies results? if not, get one!

What medications are you on at this point?

My ileum was inflammed when I had the scope which diagnosed me with UC, but I had pancolitis and my doc felt confident it was just backwash ileitis. Nothing on my biopsies suggested CD (ie, no granulomas) and as it is quite rare for CD to produce a pancolitis, that also pointed strongly to UC.

My UC was diagnosed in May 2005 and it was only mild in the rectum area, no other areas affected.

The second colonoscopy was in May 2008 and showed everything normal, no signs of inflammation.

This last colonoscopy showed a little redness/inflamation of the ileum (diagnoses: ileitis) but the rest of the colon was normal. The doc took a biopsy and I should have a result in a week. It is really weird because I do not have or had any sympthoms..... and trust me I know how it is when you are about to have a flare.

I am on Asacol 1,600 mg per day and nothing else.

Can my inflammation be bacterial and not CD?

Viky.... bacterial? It's possible, but seems more specifically isolated.

Did the doc not put you on another med after the scope (when was it exactly??). You should be on another 5ASA such as Pentasa which will release and treat the ileum.

You should also be on a rectal med.

I just had the scope done on Monday so till the biopsy is back they cannot just prescribe me anything. I do not have any pain, mucus or blood in my stool or any other sympthoms. Maybe CD is like that because UC acts different.

I should have had a GI do the scope instead of a normal doc. A GI would have known to give me more information.
