OT: Found kitten on my doorstep last night

Oh, I spent $100 on her at Petsmart today. lol. I bought her a bed (don't know if she'll sleep in it), more toys, a cute food and water dish and a cat carrier.

That's cute about the cat and the bean bag, Old Hat.

Yes, one would assume people would advertise a loss, but if she was a ferel, some people don't take them in, but treat them "on the street".

She's yours now...hope she loves the new bed and that your allergies stay at bay. 



Old Hat...Torties, torbies, torbies with wite, torties with white and calicos (patched) are sex-linked colours, female...and they're mighty able to be preggo.

But, if in the event that they are male, most are sterile, but a low number are fertile.

She's so cute. Picked up some Mucinex today and it's really helping me feel better.

I just read on wiki and it says male calicos are not fertile because in order to be a male with a calico coat, you would have to have a genetic defect causing XXY chromosones. It didn't say females couldn't get pregnant though. I was curious about that one because I've never heard such a thing. it's actually pretty interesting that a male can't be calico unless he has a mutation.

You would be surprised how many people do stupid stuff with the topical flea meds-putting on too young of a cat, putting dog stuff on a cat etc. I saw alot of crazy stuff when I worked at a vet. I had a kitten that would suckle on my male dog. She loved him like he was her Mommy and she was lost for so long when we had to put him down last year.

Hope things go well. Seems alot of people don't go looking for their animals or maybe even put them out on purpose. Sad really.

That is really sad. I don't understand how people can do that. I've been looking at the paper all week and no ads for a missing kitten. I love her so much already and can't imagine giving her away! It's great feeling better and being able to enjoy playing with her more!

Did the vet say anything about her age? I think cats go on for a long while needing their mothers & the body attachment. Thanks, Quincy for the sex-linked coat info. I got ahead of things expecting that Sara wouldn't have to get this kitten neutered. (LOL.) / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

The vet estimated her age to be about 12 weeks old. She does the suckling thing a lot. I try to move her away from my face (she likes to do it on my earlobes) and give her this one really soft blanket to do it on instead, which she likes too. She weighs 2.5lbs and still has all her baby teeth. He said the only way to know her age for sure is to watch for when her front two baby teeth fall out. When that happens, he said she's 15 weeks old.

I'll get her spaid at 5 months, I think is what the vet said. Have to bring her back in a month for second round of shots.

I am smitten with the kitten, for sure. hahah.

I think your vet was joking with you. Kittens don't lose their teeth! They just grow into adult size. Funny! Glad you are enjoying her so much, and she you!

Actually they do lose their teeth...he wasn't joking. You just rarely notice it because they're so tiny and usually the cats just swallow them.

I guess you are right! I never knew that or noticed and I have probably had at least 10 kittens in my life. You learn something new everyday! :)

I am so jealous! I love cats, & have 2 already.. if I found a kitten on my doorstep, I'd definitely think "Oh WOW, a gift from the universe!". I'm glad you've decided to keep it- although really, how could you decide anything else??? Allergies be darned!

haha. I agree, Eva Lou. I thought the same thing, she was a gift from the universe. The only reason I hesitated is my allergies are pretty bad. The Mucinex is really helping at the moment though. yay!

funny what we put up with for our pets- my daughter is allergic to the cats, yet every night insists on sleeping with them in her bed- every AM, wakes up with puffy red eyes, sometimes hives... and it's the same routine nightly, "Where are the cats?!?!?". They're jsut such a comfort, especially when you're ill- I can remember times being stuck in bed, only leaving to hit the toilet, & I'd rush back into bed where the cats were waiting to snuggle up, keep you warm, etc. Animals really sense when their owners are ill, & try to give some comfort. I'm an animal freak anyhow, animal cruelty just ruins my month... did anyone read about those poor wild animals in Ohio??? God,

I was so upset hearing about the whole ugly business, I had to go to a meditation class that night in order to give me some mental relief!

Yeah, I heard about that Eva Lou. Made me sick too. I am a huge animal lover too.

That's funny about your daughter. I'm kind of the same way. Pumpkin loves sleeping in my bed all night with me and it's hard for me to not let her despite my allergies and the fact that she's a bed hog...sleeps right in the middle of the bed so I have like 3 inches of room. :) Then she wants to do her suckling thing every night at like 4 in the morning. lol.

She's great! Thanks for asking. :) Just bought her some more toys tonight. She is spoiled. haha.

Allergies aren't bad either with the meds I'm on now. I feel so lucky to have her!

I was thinking of her/you today...awesome to hear all is getting established regarding your new-found relationship.

Kittens/cats can be the greatest comfort. When I had my lung surgery in 1975, recuperating was very painful. My (then) husband found a kitten, and I didn't want him to bring it in because we already had another cat. That middle of the night I woke up in quite a lot of pain, got my meds and then heard this meowing in the basement. Yes...he set her up with food and a litterbox.

I was smitten, and she was the greatest comfort to me. Beautiful tortie and smart as heck. Sadly, she got hit by a car a year later (eventually learned the value of an indoor cat), and the hurt/guilt still pains.

Keep us updated Sara!
