Ok im confused about this. Is a prescription needed for this or not? (I live in NYC) I've even seen the DS on ebay. I was just about to go to the pharmacy and pick it up(I have insurance). A month ago I asked my doctor about VSL3 and he told me yes you can go ahead and try that. I asked for the prescription but he said its OTC. I found out that there is a DOUBLE STRENGTH and you need a prescription so when I had an appointment with him on Tuesday, I told him about the double strength. He seemed to not know much about it as he asked me how many milligrams should he write down on the prescription. I didnt know, I just told him that they come in packets.

So now my prescription says "2 packets a day" and only saids "VSL#3"
He didnt write DS!!! Geez!!

Has anyone bought the DS recently? and needed a prescription?

I believe you need a prescription for the DS and you should refer to the VSL#3 website to determine the dosing and suggest that to your doctor. Many GI's don't know a lot about it enough to get you the correct prescription. From the website I read that the Alberta study used 3600 billion bacteria per day. I think each normal packet has 450 billion so to go by the original study you would need to consume 8 packets a day. Since that can be expensive, most use less. Verify this on the VSL#3 website is my advice.

Yeah, these GIs are super ill informed. Even my GI (again NY) wrote VSL#3 on Rx and I asked her aid to write DS on Rx. Then comes my local Rite-Aid that doesn't know such Rx medication. Even after 3 months of Rx, I am without VSL#3 DS

So to answer your question, you need Rx and you will be lucky if your insurance covers it. Mine doesn't, its Oxford.
