medication intolerance

Confused about medication. I have been using salofalk supposatories for almost 8 years on and off for fllares without any side effects,but I am unable to use Mezavant,Asacol or salofalk enemas. Have a horrible reaction- fever,diahrrea around the clock and nausea.Is it not the same medication? Any input greatly apprecieated

Canasa is topical, maybe that's why you can tolerate it? Have you ever tried Rowasa? It's similar to Canasa but treats a larger area.

zdenka, they are the same medication. Mezavent, Asacol, salofalk, Rowasa, Canasa are all forms or brand names for mesalamine. Some of us have exactly the reaction you described. You may be able to tolerate the Salofalk suppositories because the dosage is very small and very localized, while a larger dose spread over more of your colon causes problems.

Oftentimes those of us who don't tolerate mesalamine are able to tolerate balsalazide (Colazal), which is a slightly different form of 5-ASA.

I used the suppositories successfully for over 15 years!! After 17 years I have had the worst flareup of my life and am on prednisone for the first time. I have been on it almost 3 weeks and barely working! I pray one day this heals and I can go back to the suppositories!
