Hello, I'm 18 and I was just diagnosed with UC about a week ago and I've been taking Pentasa for 3 days now. I've been noticing these white things in my stool, it kind of looks like white rice.
When I took one out to examine and squashed it there was some blood.
I'm new to UC and my medication and I don't really know what it is. I'm scared they are worm eggs or something? What are these things? sad

It sounds like mucous to me or remnants of medicine.

I agree. It is most likely mucous although it could be undigested food particles. I've had this in the early stages of UC.

I think it is unlikely that they are worm eggs but I highly encourage you to consult your doctor as they can run tests on your stool.

Thanks for clearing that up guys, I checked it again and it does seem like it's just mucous. Just the idea of worms gave me a fright!

Yeah, sounds like mucous or like the medicine isn't dissolving. I get pills that haven't dissolved all the way sometimes and it does look like white stuff inside a red coating (I take Asacol). Glad it is not worms! That would be freaky.

Well, worms might be OK, but it does only sound like mucous.

Are you only on Pentasa Oral? When do you see your doc next?

I would suggest you get on rectal retention enemas asap...are you in Canada or UK?

Yeah I'm only on Pentasa Oral and I'm going to see them in 2 weeks time. I'm from the UK.

That's the ueual process...start on oral, add the rectal after confirmation of UC.

Definitely ask for the Asacol/Salofalk or whatever retention enemas.

There is available an Asacol foam, would be easier to retain, but only 1000mg dosage compared to the liquid retention enemas that come in 2000mg (2g) or 4000mg (4g) dosages.


Do you know where in the colon your UC is...throughout or limited to where?
