Heartburn

Is there any relationship between UC and heartburn? I've been dealing with this for 5 days straight. Never had it last like this before. All day, all night. Are Tums ok to take? They do seem to help for a while.

I have had heartburn longer than UC. I actually take prescription meds for it because Prilosec quit working for the full 24 hours. I will probably need to get an endoscopy at some point...not looking forward to that.

I was getting a lot of heartburn while I was on prednisone but normally I do not. Unfortunately, I do seem to have LPR which is caused by acid and now I take prescription prilosec to control it. I hope you're able to control it quickly. Tums are worth a try.

Sheri - I defintiely want to get an endoscopy at some point too. I always wonder what's going on with my LPR and this throat clearning.

I know what you mean. I have the throat clearing issue, it's very annoying. I have been taking my medication regularly and this is the first week that I feel I am making progress. I didn't have a scope for diagnosis, I went to an ENT and she looked in my throat. I am not sure how accurate the LPR diagnosis is but after reading the GERD board and seeing other members with exactly the same issues, it seems like it's accurate. I need a scope soon too & I can't afford it with insurance. Very frustrating to worry about these things all the time.

I've noticed that I seem to get reflux if I take calcium in the evening. Also get it sometimes if I eat within a few hours of going to bed. Not one cause.

I take only 1 med on a daily basis - colazal generic (balsalazide). Also take lots of vitamins but not all of them every day.
I try to remember to take pills with food. Anything taken on an empty stomach is a potential problem for me...even tylenol.

Could the problem be a side effect from your meds? Or maybe when/how you take them?

I like a natural cure and found one - 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda dissolved in a quart of warm water. Found it on a "natural cures" website. Think the directions said to drink it one cup (8 oz.) at a time. You might want to google natural remedies for heartburn/acid reflux. Seems to reduce acidity for me.

Thanks ItsAlwaysSomething. I have not made any diet changes or changes to my meds. Always taken with food. If it is a side effect from the meds it would be strange because I've been taking them for years now but things do change as we get older I guess. I will check the baking soda tip also.
