So how much is too much bleeding?

I always have blood on my pad, sometimes more than usual. I have a colonoscopy on the 7th and I'm trying to wait it out. I have no pains of anykind, I'm taking my iron twice a day, just curious if I should be saying something to the GI guy. I don't feel dizzy or lightheaded so maybe it's not a big deal. Some days the water in the toilet looks like I have my period and other days it's nothing but a little mucous. Should I say something or wait until the 7th. I've messed my clothes a few times trying to get my pants dawn fast enough. I just hate this blasted disease.

What do you think will happen between now and the 7th that would change things? Do you want your scope earlier? Do you want different meds now to reduce the bleeding? Are you using rectal meds?

Are you asking this because you're afraid you might bleed too much to live?  I wouldn't worry about that.  You might still be anemic even if you're taking an iron supplement, but you're not bleeding enough to go to the ER, IMO.

I guess I was wondering if I was bleeding alittle too much, I've had two blood transfusions in the past and I didn't even see any blood at the time and it suprised me when i had to have them. So I'll just let it go until the 7th. If it gets worse, I'll go to the ER. Thank you Kazbern.

Why are you waiting to do something about the bleeding? You should be using mesalamine retention enemas nightly until the bleeding stops and then every other night. Bleeding means your colon is ulcerated and inflammed so it's no surprise that you are having urgency. Your body is telling you it needs help...why wait to do it?

Cant you call your GI and get an Rx for the enemas?

Stoolie, I think any blood is too much blood. I can't gague whether you're at the point where you should be seen right away or if you can wait but I think if you're lightheaded and feeling dizzy, you may want to see if you can get some labs run to see where things stand. That said, I was bleeding for a year+ straight pretty heavily and I didn't to the doctor because I lacked medical insurance and I was alright. I was very anemic, dizzy, fatigued, low blood pressure but I was able to correct it with iron supplements. With your history of needing transfusions, it's much more worrisome.

You're telling me my story. How much bleeding is too much bleeding? Any bleeding is too much bleeding. I have to agree with the others who have encouraged you to speak to your gastroenterologist right away. While your colonoscopy on February 7th will help him pin-point the cause, there can be nothing lost by treating the problem with conservative 5ASA drugs, oral and topical, as necessary right away. But you've given us nothing in the way of information about your present treatment regimen. Are you on medications of any kind now or are you flying blind?

Stoolie, I don't think it's the bleeding as much as the flaring in general...and you're not being fully treated to deal with the rectal inflammation.

At the very least, call the doctor NOW and ask for rectal mesalamine retention enemas. It actually won't do you any good to wait until the scope, and to ask for them then.

How many times a day are you having to use the toilet?

Any blood is too much. You listed that you do enemas as needed. They are needed NOW :) And you may want to be taking some iron. Have you had blood tests lately?

In my opinion, you should contact your doctor's office asap and tell them what is happening.
You're taking iron twice a day but is it going right through you?
All that bleeding is not good!

What's going to happen when you prepare for the colonoscopy?
That process is hard on us even if we're not actively bleeding.
Please call your doctor.

any blood is too much,..... but I personally wouldn't rush to get meds, consider all options before going that route. Diet being #1. This is what I would do if I could rewind 10 years :) I see you wrote eating food is one of your favorite activities. Mine too!!! I'm so much more cautious what I eat now vs. before though. Hope you find what works for you Stoolie
