I don't know alot about 6mp and it looks like I will need to take it in the near future. Can someone tell me what the risks and side effects are? Thanks!

You can do a Google search or you can use the search function located on the upper blue bar. You can search for 6mp or Mercaptopurine but type in "6mp used for Ulcerative colitis".

I've been on it for about 5 or 6 years or so. You may only get side effects when you first start it such as nausea, headaches, fatigue and mild hair loss. Once your body gets used to it, the possible side effects will lessen. You will have to go in for frequent blood testing. The blood tests determine how you are metabolizing it and to make sure your liver enzymes and CBC are good.

There is a very rare risk of lymphoma but it's almost non-existent in Uc'ers mainly because we take such low doses. Also, it can lower your ability to fight infections.

I was on Imuran and I feel like that's the main reason my body was not able to fight off c. diff. Like Red_34 said, "it can lower your ability to fight infections." Other than that, I didn't notice any other main side effect. Then again, I wasn't on it long enough to let you know about any long term side effects but in the short run, my immune system went down down down.

Thanks for the replies. I read something about staying out of sunlight while on 6mp. Does anyone know why?

I believe it is because there is an increased risk for melanoma. I see a dermatologist and that helps keep my anxiety down but I have a olive tone complexion so I think I am probably not high risk.

I have been on 6mp for about a year and a half and I've been doing well. I have had a few situations where my WBC has dropped out of the normal range and I've had to stop the medication for a period of time but I've been able to start it again and I've stayed in remission so I can't complain too much.

Please feel free to ask any questions you have. I remember when I was starting 6mp, I was scared and I REALLY didn't want to be on the medication but as of now, I can't say too much bad about it, I am feeling good.

sierra, 6mp helped me a lot. it didn't get me in total remission but with the remicade, my u.c. is fine. i will be off of it pretty soon, too.

my doctor said it puts you at a higher risk for skin cancer and also fertility problems.
