SEVERE BLOOD LOSS WARFARIN POPCORN!

Hi

My Mum has UC since 09 and controlled well with Asacol. She knows foods she needs to avoid (especially acidic and vinegar) Other than that she eats normally.
Last night she had whole large bag of popcorn (has had before but smaller amount and not often with no affect) She was woken with slight stomach pain (never gets that) and considerable blood loss. Paramedic came out as she became dizzy, white and BP dropped. She is now in hospital. Should know more tommorrow.
She got thrombosis 6 weeks ago and is on Warfarin, do you think that the popcorn where normally tolerated, has had this effect due to the blood thinner?
She suffered debilitating fatigue end last year for 3 months and had steroids temporarily which now seem to have perked her up.Doc thought could be due to UC.
Just very hard to accept that she has been symptom free near enough for 3 years and now not sure if all these symptoms are colitis or something else?
Any advice greatly appreciated.

Popcorn may have been the "icing on the cake" I have UC and cannot eat popcorn or pizza without severe immediate reactions. But that is only me and now I am in remission I would not risk eating either. Unfortunately that does not help when others are eating pizza, "it just looks and smells so good". My mum is on Warfrin and has to have different doses on different days to manage her blood. Sometimes it can become thinner so it may be a combination. Hope your mum gets better soon will be saying a prayer for the both of you.

Popcorn can reek havoc for some with UC even in small amounts. If her colon had a little inflammation even though she had no symptoms the popcorn could really aggravate that. I can eat popcorn with no ill effects but I don't eat it if I'm flaring or feeling off. I can't give any advice on the blood thinner though. Hope she feels better.

thanks for the advice. she is also giving up smoking, but has tried this before without these effects. can you lose massive amounts of just blood with uc?

Warfarin can definitely make her bleed more. Was she having her labs (PT/PTT/INR) drawn regularly? It sounds like the popcorn irritated her colon and she bled a lot more than normal because she's on warfarin. Her blood has to be checked frequently to make sure her levels are in the therapeutic range. Sometimes the PT/PTT/INR levels are too high and the warfarin dose has to be lowered.

yes she has her inr checked regularly. it has been 2.7 which they are happy with, thought today as she hasnt had it checked for about a week that it would be too high, but was the same.
i think the same as you though, i think although her blood isnt too thin, the popcorn has irritated her colon and because of the warfarin, this has caused the blood .......only worry is that there was so much blood.
