Prednisone question - 20mg in morning or 15 in morning 5 at night?

Continuing my taper and going down to 20mg tomorrow - Should I take 15mg in the morning and 5 at night or take all 20mg in the morning? My GI just specified to drop tomorrow and then give him a call on friday and I am unable to give him a call back today to discuss this.


What would you all recommend? Thanks.

I always take pred in the AM.
It's very hard to sleep while on prednisone, so the idea is to try to have it semi-out of your system by bed time.
MY GI always advised me to take it all in the morning. Good luck on the taper!

Thank you! Good reason, I have been unable to sleep for around a week even with ambien 5mg.

You could call your pharmacist and ask their opinion. I was under the impression that the reason the entire pred dose is taken once a day is so your body will naturally produce its own cortisol at least part of the day. If the instructions on the rx bottle say to take it once daily in the a.m., I'd continue with that while tapering unless you've been told otherwise. That's what I did on my taper.

When I started this round with the evil drug I was at 40mg in the morning but was having issues over night with my UC, so when I went down to 35 we decided to try 20mg in the morning and 15 at night and it worked well.

When you say we, I'm assuming you mean you and your doc. So how much and when are you currently taking?

I am currently on 25mg going down to 20mg tomorrow. As advised by beatUC I will take all 20 in the morning and hopefully that will help me get some sleep!

I'm on 25mg and take 20 at 7am and 5 around 1pm. I do this because I was having joint pain overnight.. Really bad joint pain and that was when I was taking it all early in the morning. I think taking the 5mg at 1pm keeps it flowing through my system keeping the joint pain away. But it could just be me. This medicine is some crazy stuff.

I agree with BeatUC. As far as controlling the UC and managing symptoms, I don't think it really matters when you take it, but I choose to take mine all in the morning because of the sleep issue. I still have bad insomnia, but it would probably be even worse if I was taking part of my dose at night. Good luck - hopefully you won't have to stay on it too long.

I take my 20mg in the morning all at the same time.  I was told to take it in the morning because of the sleep thing.  I have no problem sleeping.

Happy with the decision to drop it at night. Slept around 7 hours last night, massive improvement over sleeping 4-5.
