I have read about antibiotic use in UC but I have never tried it.  The new GI suggested it.  Have any of you tried this and had success?

New GI went well, I will post a full update on how it went as soon as I can.  Just got home to kids and have a few things to do first.

i have been in a flare since the beginning of february. i took a remicade dose at the end of january but it did absolutely nothing. i started on flagyl about 4 days ago and there's a big decrease in my symptoms. not remission by any means at all but definitely less bloating, pain, frequency, and diarrhea.

Thanks for responding banana girl. He mentioned flagyl too but decided on cipro. I hope it helps both of us

So now I just read the black box warning on cipro. Sigh... is flagyl better? I thought people use this all the time. I hate making these decisions. I want to be better and new GI thought it was worth a try.. Thoughts?

seasons, somebody posted recently about the dangers of cipro. i didn't wanna say anything but it seems you know now, too. i feel like there's lawsuits on a lot of drugs though so you always have to weigh the risks and benefits. here's a good site about it:

honestly, i just went to a medi help clinic and asked for an antibiotic. the doctor there gave me flagyl because she said it helps most with colitis flares. i mentioned vancomysin but she wouldn't give it to me! my friend took vanco and said it helped him a lot. i guess you just have to always be aware of the side effects of drugs. it's hard because they all have them!

I think I was the one who posted it, Joanna.
There was a warning sent out about Cipro and Levaquin (in the same antibiotic family), stating that it can cause several side effects that can be permanent. I would stay away from that antibiotic family as much as possible.

I would try to stay away from antibiotics, since I believe that's what was my trigger from chronic use over the years, but who knows, maybe a less potent antibiotic may help. Perhaps LDN.

My first GI doctor put me on Cipro to try and treat my UC. It made me so sick (nausea and dizziness) so I told her about it. She then switched me to Flagyl which was even worse. I ended up in the hospital mostly to due to being in a horrible flare but I'm convinced those antibiotics made it even worse. I think some people have bad reactions to them and others are fine with them just like everything else used to treat UC.

Now I have no idea if I should try it. sigh...

I talked to my pharmacist at CVS and he said that warning generally pertains to those over 60. He also said the dose I got was standard and that they prescribe it a lot. I got the sense that he wasn't worried about it. Of course if I"m the one with a bad reaction it won't matter. Anyway I have to keep trying things because I want to get better and I've read that some people have stopped bleeding with Cipro. I may run it by my PCP and take it tomorrow.

Last year, I was on Cipro on and off due to kidney stone and procedure involving its removal. My urologist prescribed me quite often and I had no issues whatsoever. I wouldn't worry unless that class of antibiotics have given you a reaction.

With the warnings, the pharma companies are just covering their butt and CVS pharmacist is right. The way it goes is, if any adverse side effect is reported during phase III clinical trial, it goes on paper, irrespective of the age and other conditions the subject is suffering from. If I were you, I would not worry and honestly, you won't know unless you give a try.
Many here have used Azithromycin without any issue and that gave me a worse flare of my life, so now I know, I am fine with Cipro but not with Azithro..

     I have a friend who went into complete remission with Flagyl.  It didn't help me one iota though.  However, when I had to be placed on an antibiotic while I suffered with UP, the GI doctor always had me take Flagyl along with it.  I usually had to take Cipro and Flagyl when I had an infection of any sort.  My doctor explained that the Flagyl kept the good bacteria from being destroyed.

     After my operation, I developed an abscess inside the anus which my surgeon had to drain.  He placed me on Cipro.  Three days later, I could barely get out of bed!  It affected all my joints.  Now I can't take the stuff! rolleyes

     At the moment, I have a gum abscess and tomorrow have a dental appointment for the tooth to be removed (actually a cap).  My dentist has me on Clindomycin.

I tried it with flagyl dyrin gmy last flare up without too much success but I am happy I tried it regardless.

I'm new to this thread, but I wanted to give a big warning to anyone taking Ciprofloxacin. It's not really intended to be a first line antibiotic, and it has some serious side effects; especially if you're over 60, and you happen to be taking a steroid (like prednisone) etc.. I have first hand experience with a family member that took a fluoroquinolone drug. BE CAREFUL!!

I don't see Colazal (Balsalazide Disodium) being mentioned; has anyone tried that??

Well I took cipro for 37 days, for someting else, did nothing for the UC, or rectum, on me.
