A little background.

Began exhibiting symptoms last February. Was too afraid to go to the doctor or tell anyone. Had bloody diarrhea from February - May. Mid May I get terrible food poisoning and I was in bed for a week. After the food poisoning I get into remission (I didn't know what disease I had so I thought it was gone). A month of remission and healthy bowel movements go by and I get back into a flareup. I have terrible bloody diarrhea from June-Early September (15-20 bowel movements a day). Finally went to a doctor in late August, but coincidentally, the day I moved back into my apartment for school, I had gone back into remission without taking any medication.
I end up getting prescribed asacol and stayed in remission until 2 weeks ago where I started flaring.

My body was discharging a lot of mucus and I had a lot of bowel movements but no blood. At the same time, I ran out of medication and had to skip a few dosages. I think this pushed me over the edge and caused the blood to reappear and caused me to flare up again.
It's been 2 weeks since I've had bloody diarrhea and I'm taking asacol again. 2011 was hell for me. I had no idea what was going on and it was the worst experience of my life. I don't want that to happen again.

I have a doctor's appointment in a few weeks.


How long does blood usually last for you guys?

Hello, sorry you are not feeling well : ( I hate the Bloody D the most, it is horrible I am with ya man, it is some terrible stuff ,hopefully I have some advice that will help.

Make sure to take your medication! Your doctor will most likely put you on stronger meds when you meet, maybe a steroid. But ask about rectal meds! He may be hesitant if your inflammation is throughout your colon. However I have pancolitis and rectal meds help a lot with my symptoms, especially blood!

If you are put on the prednisone, It will most likely help with your symptoms. I just got off pred and am feeling great, solid BMs, I am also on the SCD diet (www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info). I have to say the mesalamine enema definitely helped with the bleeding. Last idea, if you are having really bad blood, you can try a 24-48 liquid diet, just water and some homemade chicken broth. This usually helps my blood.

I believe everyone has their own unique path to beating this disease, do some detective work and maybe give a diet a try.

I second getting an Rx for mesalamine (retention) enema. Think of it as a topical treatment for your insides, not like an enema used for constipation. Your doctor should have put you on this and if he/she does anything other than write you a script for a 30 day supply find another doctor one who is more pro-active and a specialist in UC.

Yes, steroid enema may be called for for a very short term use but then use the mesalamine enemas (brand name is Rowasa) until bleeding stops.

I have had great success with diet modification but that takes time and much more effort than using an enema while you sleep. No, enemas are not as easy as popping a pill but they work.

Unfortunately with this disease the same thing will not work for everyone. Some people do well on Prednisone to control a flare and some do well on stronger medication. I take two different rectal meds daily to control the symptoms while I am tapering off of prednisone: cortifoam in the AM and mesalamine enema in the PM. I found that the prednisone helped to control the bleeding (took 8 weeks!) and then the two rectal meds help me maintain less mucous and no blood. You and your GI may have to experiment with a combo that will work for you. Try to have some patience but see your doc as soon as possible. Sounds like 2011 was no picnic for you and you need to work on getting better.

There are also supplements you can take but I am not sure if any target blood specifically. Maybe others will post to help you out. Good luck and don't give up :)
