In my opinion, you should give the Rowasa enemas a chance to work.
However....they might not be as effective if you don't make other changes that may be causing problems.
If I had known 10 years ago what I know now, I would have eliminated lactose (dairy) and gluten while using the mesalamine enemas and taking generic Colazal (balsalazide) orally. (Treat from both ends.)
I have found diet and probiotics to be key in reducing symptoms.
I totally refused to use prednisone but used cortisone steriod enemas for a brief time but got immediate side effects (headaches) so did not want to continue using them. Had no trouble going back to mesalamine type.
You can find lots of info about
food combining and alternative treatment at cureforulcerativecolitis.com.
I stongly suggest you take the time to look at this website.
Also, take a look at LDN websites to be informed if you think you might need it in the future. One website is lowdosenaltrexone.org.
Very effective for many people and little or no side effects.
Best of luck....and finish that PHD!
