resection of lower bowel instead of total j-pouch? also 6-mp and probiotic Question.

Hey all, So after reading about 6-mp and all the usual side effects Im pretty sure I dont want to go that route. I was wondering if my origional DX of Pancolitis is now just effecting the lower colon and rectum why can they not do a resection of the colon? Also I am looking for a probiotic called Align and have a difficult time finding it here in Canada. Any suggestions. I have read on this site so many people are on this so thought I would give it a try. Thanks everyone.

DX pan colitis 1980s
mild dysplasia 2002 -during flare
frequent scopes after showed no dysplasia.
ASACOL 6-10 TABS daily
Prednisone 40mg and taper during flare.
Periods of good remision, 3yrs but then inevitable flare around 3x per yr requireing pred.
Long time with UC - 52 yrs old. wondering how to cope with UC in 70s, effects of pred all these yrs , considering J-Pouch now while Im relatively young and healthy.
Last scope May 22 2012 showed UC active in lower colon and rectum. and Diverticulitis.
Dr. suggested 6-mp and treat flares with Cortifoam instead of Prednisone as she too is thinking too long on pred.

There is always a chance that it could spread to another area of the colon, especially if you had pancolitis. That's why they always remove the entire colon in UC patients.

I know amazon.ca carries Align on their site.

I don't think it's considered an acceptable treatment to remove part of the colon for UC. It's all or none unfortunately.

There are much better probiotics than Align.

Ditto on the resection....it's never done from what I understand because of the above reasons stated...and...your entire is already "affected" anyway, regardless of where it's limited to at this point.

what are some names of other probiotics. I like the idea of 1 pill.

While I don't have the UC dx nor was it the reason for my colon resection (Stage I rectal cancer in 1999, 1 inch tumor barely inside), my surgeon had to remove 90% of my sigmoid. Along with 15 inches above that point. I have never been the same since, I have on bad days 20 bm's. If I eat, I will be in the bathroom for an hour or two after the meal, I will have repeated bm's, stool is small in amount (picture rabbit droppings). This is just a way of life for me. But anytime I see a thread asking if the lower colon and I think this means the sigmoid (the GI tract's reservoir), is important (for normal daily bm output), I feel compelled to add my 2 cents worth. I wish I had even 50% of my sigmoid but it's long gone. It's the #1 reason why I can't retain stool inside (my surgeons keep saying), when they pulled down my remaining colon and reattached me, this is just a narrower part of the colon and you can't make it swell enough to hold back stool for fewer than 20 bm's a day.

Hi ellie,

I'm in Canada too and I used a probiotic called Primadophilus Reuteri made by natures way, it works very well and guarantees colon release...I stopped buying it cuz in my area it trippled in price, so since I purchased it from Sangsters Health food store, I decided to try Sangsters brand called ProBio TX-11 and it works equally well, but priced better.

Like the Primadophilus Reuteri, only one cap/day is required but it also requires refridgeration as well (both can be found in the stores fridge).

Hi Ellie,

It's the whole colon or nothing when it comes to surgery for UC. It will just pop up somewhere else in the colon that is remaining. They just don't do it that way.
