Hot off pubmed.Not a real good study but something to be aware of.

Tagamet H2r blocker can for some reason put you into surgery.

Besides this there are other studies that indicate PPI's make you more

prone to C.diff.  The hydrochloric acid in your stomach is one of your

first lines of defense.

I wished I could get off a PPI :( Unfortunately I also have gastritis with acid reflux or I would so be off it!

Red_34 I was just getting ready to post about a question about GERD and UC.
I'd like your input please.

I went to hospital last night because of severe heartburn. The took a regular chest x-ray and two EKG's and said nothing looked funny.
I was given some Sucralfate and Zofran. Have to take Sucralfate one hour before each meal, and Zof every 6 hours. I also went to the Dr. two days ago for unusual heart palpitations so I'm wearing a Cardiac Event Monitor now.
So...

-Does Sucralfate flare up your UC? I noticed this morning's contents was swimming in slightly orange water, no visible blood, and none on the at all so I'm at a loss.

-I'm now feeling nausea when I eat, never had that before and all I had was small cup of plain white rice, and small cup of applesauce, does this happen to you?

-I've been getting heart palpitations since the heartburn was kicking in. Do you think they are related?

I have a GI appointment in two weeks, I just hope there is nothing seriously wrong with me.

I have never taken H2r blockers, so for me it could not be the cause of my UC and I know at least a few people like me.
Of course, any drugs (prescription or over the counter) have side effects and none of them are safe to take every single day, a few times per day for a long time.
If somebody has GERD, gastritis or a heartburn, in my opinion, they need to at least try Activated charcoal. It is much safer and more affordable.

mbailey, I can't comment on the Sucralfate because I am not on this. However, I on Omperazole (Prilosec) and it hasn't bothered my Uc. I don't have heartburn but acid reflux disease. I don't get the "burn" at all. It started as a painful lump like feeling in my chest and severe stomach pain. I was very nauseous from it. The Omperazole helps with the stomach pain and the nausea.

I have had heart flutters all my life - I have a mild MVP but adding in a PPI or lack of hasn't made it any worse or better.

You can try asking your questions on our GERD forum as well. I'm sure someone there might be able to help you better.

I've been on protonix since I was pregnant with my daughter and took prilosec every day before that. I always seemed to have heartburn. I've never had an endoscopy but I'm sure my GI will hit me up for it eventually. I have tried to get off the Protonix but the heartburn comes back.

I think at this point everything we take can have a negative effect on us in some way and if I worry too much about it then I will never leave my bed in the morning. I take each day as it comes and thats all I can do. :)

The stomach acid also keeps the H. Pylori which causes ulcers in check. I seem to be one of the lucky ones because when I have heartburn I just cut back on caffeine and chocolate for relief.

Of somewhat related interest, the near eradication of h.pylori in the West may be a major player in the growth in obesity in the past few decades, because h.pylori had apparently co-evolved in humans to help regulate ghrelin to suppress appetite after meals.
