Pain relief whilst flaring...anything other than Paracetamol?

So my GI told me the other day that I should not take any opioids like (codeine) during this flare I am having, as it can contribute to bowel distention/perforation. Taking 2*Paracetamol tablets every 4 hours doesn't really touch the night cramps though. Does anyone know of any non opioid pain relief that we can take during a flare?

I am going to try contacting my Dr tomorrow, but was hoping someone might be able to englighten me in the meantime :)

i want to know too. im Irish so we dont have any of those mentioned. must ask my GP. I was taking solphodine. it a mixture of paracetemol and codiene. ill be giving those a miss now then. options are limited.

I never did get to ask my GI Doc as the pain got too bad an I am now in hospital. For pain they have had me on Endone, an opioid/narcotic. I asked them if this was risky, and the answers have all been similar to what Red_34 said. They reckon yes it can slow things down which may constipate and contribute to problems if unattended, but that in my case (rapid bowels in a flare) its unlikely to cause constipation, and a low risk. To paraphrase them, as long as its not used all the time and that constipation is not formed whilst flaring, then it should be ok.
