Reading your post, my heart aches for you. It is like deja-vu.
I don't know your age, but I was 52 when diagnosed in 1998. Over the years, I became prednisone dependent. It gave me full blown osteoporosis, which I will suffer with forever. As far as high blood pressure...OY.....at the time of my surgery, June 28, 2010, I was on three different blood pressure meds and they still couldn't get it lower than 216/110. I was hospitalized for a severe flare and the BP in 2008. My GI doctor NEVER suggested surgery. You know who convinced me to go for surgery? Suebear...yep. Thank GOD for this forum. I was on 6MP, Colazal, rectal meds (which I could NOT retain because of my severe ulcerations in the rectum), probiotics. My doctor took me off the 6MP two weeks prior to my starting dose of Remicade (which failed after my 3rd infusion). I then tried Humira...nada. Prednisone also gave me type 2 diabetes and I had to take Medformin (not sure of spelling) for that!
I am sooooooo happy to tell you that once off that poison, prednisone....my blood pressure is easily controlled with only one pill (25 mgm of toprol xl) a day. On prednisone, I took Norvasc, toprol (50 mgm) AND benicar. I no longer have diabetes either. I went from taking 17 - 25 pills daily down to only one pill a day.
Your condition sounds sooo familiar as to how much I suffered. I had a total colectomy with end ileostomy and have NO regrets. I feel great!!! If you feel you have gone through the gamut of meds and nothing is working anymore. Do not procrastinate. Seek out a good colorectal surgeon and have the surgery. The surgery is not an easy one and, for me because of my age and deteriorating health before surgery, the recovery was long, but OOOOOOH so worth it.
