I was first diagnosed with ulcerative colitis 5 months ago. I was treated and had thought I had gone into remission. However, I just got my second flare up last week, initially there where bloody stools so I started to take a prednisone taper. Its been a week, the prednisone has stopped the blood in my stool but my abdominal pain is mind blowningly antagonizing to the point were I literally feel my colon is going to explode. And it seems as if the prednisone isn't stopping the inflammation and the rumbling going on the left side of my body . All I feel is a burning sensation and I am super constipated (but still going to the bathroom if that makes sense)..I'm nauseous bloated...I think the prednisone is making me crazy. I don't know if I should go the emergency room or just wait until monday to see my GI. Any insite will help. Oh and I'm currently taking 4.8 g of lialda daily. confused

If you are in that much pain, I would not hesitate to go to the ER. Better safe than sorry.

In my opinion you should call your doctor's office before going to the emergency room where you might be treated by someone who has no expertise in dealing with your problems.

Although I do not have UC, I feel compelled to reply to your topic. Why? Your topic title description! While I suffer from severe IBS like symptoms, wow, I can relate! My insides are a wreck too. Hang in there.

I will tell you that you've found a wonderful, online medical community. There are such helpful and understanding members on this forum. So stick around.

Still have to smile at your topic title, in sympathy. I've been known to walk around my house mimicking a box with my hands lamenting - "I want a transplant, I want a transplant! Someday they're going just give people new GI tracts......"

If only we could whip our tracts and swap them out.

I will tell that I have heard that surgeons do in a sense whip out our tracts during major surgeries, I know they whipped out mine and when they put them back, they are never again, the way they were prior to surgery.....but that's here nor there.

There has been a lot of times in the past that I felt the same way. The pain was very intense and I would ride it out - very stupid for me to do - I just hate hospitals. My GI would then chastise me, saying that things could go from bad to worse very quickly. The hospital I go to has my GI on staff so now I know that if I am to go to the ER, they contact him if they are unsure of how to proceed. The last time I went to the ER, the pain was excruciating - so painful that morphine barely touched it. I ended up being hospitalized for 3 days; I probably would've ended up staying longer but I wanted to go home.

Call your doctor. If he/she is not there, get in contact with an associate. There is no reason to suffer if you don't have to.

my pain gets very bad, too, ihanna. sometimes i feel like i just wanna faint. i know exactly the "constipated but going to the bathroom anyways" poops you mean. little amounts that you have to strain to get out. very frustrating.

prednisone caused a lot of abdominal pain for me, too, and i'm not sure what you can do for that. i had to start 6mp and remicade with prednisone because it wasn't working. the 6mp took a lot of the pain away and the remicade just made me tired all the time.

is there any position that makes you feel better? taking hot baths is very helpful for me as well as rubbing peppermint oil all over my belly and then putting a heating pad on top of that.
