Hi,

I went for my follow up appt with my doc.  I was told to stay on 4.8 g daily of Asacol.  Anyone else on a high dose for long term treatment?  I tried to scale back a little but quickly felt symptoms so went back to current dose...

Been on 4.8 since Feb 2012. Plus presidone 40 g day and suppository at night. know how you feel.VIEW IMAGE

I was asked to do 4.8g or Lialda (4 tablets), but I had some sleep problems and leg pain that seemed (not proven) to go with taking the 2 pills after dinner. I got switched to 3 pills (3.6g) all taken in the morning. Been taking this dose for over two years. Don't seem to be any problems, except I don't have full remission -- yet.

I took 12 tabs of regular Asacol for a year and a half. I didn't notice any side-effects but I don't think it did much for me.

I was on 3.6g and then 4.8 for quite a while. Usually on 3.6 but I don't think Asacol is too worrisome. I was also using 4g enemas and 1g Canasa at the same time and I've never had an adverse side effect.

Well, I did have hairloss which was not fun but eventually, it stopped and regrew.

Mine doesn't seem to be digesting well these days. They come out whole. Is this normal? It's not just the shell. I gloved up and picked one out of the toilet and it was whole. pfffft...Boy they cost enough.

Stoolie, I have seen them from time to time. It's weird because when I am flaring, everything runs thought my colon so quickly that they come out whole. I also notice when I take Asacol 400, I may see one in the toilet which is only 400mg but when I am taking Lialda, I'll see the whole darn pill and that's 1200mg. Sometimes I think the lower dose makes more sense for that reason. I posted something in the resources thread on the top of the forum main page that shows the PH where the various formulations dissolve. It's interesting to see and may be worth looking at. If you're seeing them all the time, you may do better on a different formulation.

Was on 12 for quite a while, then dropped to six per doctor saying it was OK because I was in remission. Flared immediately. Reduce very gradually. Good stuff, Asacol. No problems....

Is your UC throughout your colon?

Rectal meds in combo with the oral...and if all is good, rectal meds should deal with the early flares and you could try to lower the dosage of oral...tapering slowly to find a maintenance.

When you say you tapered to a lower dosage in the past, what did you lower it to, and what process did you use?

Hi, I was diagnosed with proctosigmoiditis. I played doctor and lowered it to the maint dose of Asacol but quickly felt all the fun stuff we deal with. I am back to taking the full dose but am still flaring bad. Not sure if I should call the doctor and ask about pred or not.

My GI told me he would consider dropping my Lialda dose (4.8g daily) after my next scope (one year after horrible flare). He stressed...consider...crazy how long it takes for this to stabilize!
