I recently saw an IBD specialist GI at the Houston Medical Center who has looked over my case and presented me with either trying Remicade, or Methotrexate. She said I could try Methotrexate injections weekly if I was not ready to get on biologics, and that she has has some success with a few patients. She seems very knowledgeable and very up to date on the latest treatments and trials--younger, and more the scientist type than your usual GI doc that follows that standard colitis protocol every time. She also mentioned some trial medications that may be available before the end of the year and seemed to have that passion a younger person has as opposed to the docs that have been doing the same thing for decades.
The Methotrexate would be my way of putting off trying biologics, and it if it works, great, but its at least one more thing to try medically before Remicade.
My question is whether its worth trying Methotrexate or just jumping to Remicade as it is simply a more proven medication. I am steroid dependent at this point and I dont think I have the option of trying to make it with LDN or other alternatives currently that may or may not pan out. I will continue to look down that path but given my current life situation, I feel that I need to stick to a medical solution that is more proven and could start helping me get off prednisone.
