My son has not been able to eat for 3 days. He says his stomach hurts every time he tries to eat and the pain will last for hours after he has eaten. He has been flaring for 2 weeks now. Just wondering if it is typical to have pain when eating, during a UC flare?

I've never had pain while eating but when I was flaring eating could cause me to get up midmeal and run to the bathroom. Has he spoken to his GI about this? What meds is he currently taking?

At the moment he is on Cipro/Flagyl, Lialda (4 daily),and prednisolone. I asked his GI about it yesterday and he said yes it was the UC. Seems a little strange to me.

maybe he could try a nausea med like zofran or prilosec.

I forgot to mention that he is also on Prilosec. He does feel some nausea but mostly pain. Its so heartbreaking to see him like this.

hmm i usually only experience colon pain. my stomach is okay. has he had an upper endoscopy? he could have an ulcer in his stomach. that happened to me last year with my really bad UC flare.

He says his whole stomach hurts when he eats. He hasn't had an upper endoscopy since 03/2011 where it was discovered that he had "erosive gastritis". That seemed to not be much of an issue and it was never really addressed by his doctors. We currently have an appointment on the 24th of July for an endoscopy and a Flex sig. I just pray that they can figure this out and get him some relief. Maybe his inflammation is just so severe that it aggravates everything whenever he tries to eat.

I became very nauseous due to my rectal pain. I had to stop eating solid foods and went on an absorb plus diet. The shakes are formulated for us and are easy to keep down.

I'm glad he is getting an endo. Sounds like he needs one to see what could be causing this. Maybe the prilosec isn't helping enough.

I assume when he says stomach it's the intestines. You never know. With time he'll be able to tell which is which.

Also do the meds have side effects which cause nausea?

Did the GI say something else after this?

Sometimes I don't feel like eating neither when I'm flaring because it gives me cramps and the runs.

Hope your son feels better soon.

I had a lot of nausea with my first flare. I couldn't eat more than a couple of bites before I felt too nauseous to eat. The only thing that didn't make me feel sick was Arby's roast beef sandwiches. Weird, I know, but maybe there is something out there that won't bother him? How long has he been on prednisone?

I am so sorry to hear about it.
I have been having the same symptoms as your son.
Every time I eat, I get pain in my stomach - mine is exactly in the area below the sternum and goes down to just about 2 inches aboce the belly button - and it lasts several hours.

Is that where his pain is? Ask him to show you specifically where his pain is located.

It's probably related more to his GERD problem than UC.

My GI gave me some PPI meds, called dexilant. It made all my symptoms much worse: more severe stomach pain, severe D, and trouble sleeping - these are apparently side effects of this class of drugs, and my GI told me to stop the meds.

I have upped my slippery elm powder "cocktail" to 4 times daily, at the suggestion of BITW, have added DGL before meals. It helped some, but not enough with the pain.

I have since found that the homeopathic remedy Cimicifuga has taken away all the pain!

I hope he starts to feel better soon, and the endoscopy doesn't reveal too terrible a result.

Let us know what happens on the 24th.

So sorry to hear about your son...Try giving him cooked ,pureed soft foods,homemade chicken broth,ripe banana and yogurt.Avoid processed foods,sugar and dairy as much as possible.

hmm i was gonna say i started taking pantoprazole 40mg , a heartburn pill prescription & the pain when i ate got SO much better! predisone i think caused it , then seen he takes a heartburn pill already . i hope for the best so he can not be in pain when he eats .

I dont have pain while eating but sometimes I do as soon as I finish eating. My stomach will get very swollen and cause a lot of pressure and pain. It makes me a picky eater and not eat at times.

thank you all for the suggestions. At this point he can't even stomach chicken broth. His pain seems to be right below the sternum and encompasses his whole belly. I gave him some l-glutamine and slippery elm last night in hopes of calming things down. He's still in bed so I don't know how he is feeling today.

Andrina: The Cipro/Flagyl can cause stomach pain so its hard to tell what's the culprit here. His GI seems to think that this is UC related. .

kloe0038: He has been on prednisolone for 3 days; its one of those 6 day packs where you slowly decrease the dosage. Its similar to Prednisone.
