Getting CT scan with Barium solution (with sorbitol)

Hello All,

 

My Dr. has ordered an abdominal CT scan and I have to drink two large containers of Berry Smoothie Readi-Cat 2.

 

I've done some research on this and it contains about 32 grams of Sorbitol per bottle. I've always gotten severe diarrhea with dosages of sorbitol much smaller (such as in sugar free candies) which has led to a UC Flare.

 

I've called the radiology center and told them I can't take sorbitol. There answer was to come in and get a pre-med such as benadryl to stop any allergic reaction. This is ridiculous.

 

Does anyone know of a way to persuade them to give me a barium solution without sorbitol?

I don't think it's barium they're getting you to drink. I did a CT last summer with a contrast solution and it did give me diarrhea - I think it gives everyone diarrhea. But I don't know why.

I agree with you that the benedryl option is ridiculous. I'd call your GI and ask for a different test (MRI? barium x-ray?) or get your GI to figure out a different contrast solution for you.

i have also had this done and i had bright green diarrhea for about 3 days. it looked like mountain dew or something.
