I know Quincy would say 'your butt rules', but i think my quest at this time of my life is really to accomplish one thing: To let me colon know that IAM the boss, darn it!!!! You are probably after the same thing.

This disease has broken me up and tore me apart when i was the most vulnerable...but i will not stop fighting it and soon it will have no option but to yield and go into a lifelong remission, right where it belongs. Because im gonna bombard it from every angle with absolutely no mercy.

I am now through the horror. I navigated successfully through the terrible storm. 7 days of hell.

Not only did every non-Production Database get corrupted with 1 million bad blocks from the storage farm melt-down but production itself had a small corruption which blocked the backups from running and one full machine node in the 2-machine cluster died. Then in discussion with the new hardware SA I realized production was not safe it shared hardware with the backups. I was freaking out. I was thinking this startup might be going out of business.

The stress level was so high it increased my cortisol output and drove the UC flare out. I had a 2 year remission going med-free but the record heat this summer began to kill me. That flare was getting nasty.

August is always flare season for me.

I am not doing anything for my condition, I am not taking any meds I am not eating the bars I am just working round the clock. My daughter came in crying at 3:00 am that she could not sleep so I baked chicken and boiled couscous and its working until 4:30 am when she finally collapsed. I have no blood and I have solid waste and there is no urgency any longer. Apparently I am NOT gluten sensitive.

I am not taking anything and I am improving - well except the Camarino ;)

I bet that blunts the immune system - take that you evil force of nature.

i was 360 lbs two + yrs ago, when i had my first flare which was undignosed and began eating way better ( smaller amounts, no processed) with no signs of symptoms (that i knew of). i have lost 170 lbs since then and now an fighting to keep weight on ( who woulda thought). i work out everyother day and have an ok build but i am struggling to keep it and feel like my muscles are flabby... what do you do as far as food/protien stc to keep mass on??

also i am a little confused to your medical regieme?? as i said before was prett good for a while then had my second incident where i was dx with pan colitis. i was really sick from jan 2012 till this june then got better for 3 - 4 weeks but flared again ( not as bad, working through it). i am taking 5ASA 500mg 8 times a day and using cortifoam enemas morning and night... not so much cramping unless need bathroom, still have bad urgency and D... what all do you do?? what are the bars?

I'm having a ton of trapped gas, but really bulky good stools in the AM. I will cut back on my bars. Yesterday I had half bar today only a quarter. I get that gurggeling gas, lots of burping and nothing passes unless I lay down and twist and turn and lay on my left side. Sucks. I should get back on probiotics maybe that will help? Any suggestions aguywithuc? I'm having a little of bar with a cup of coffee and a glass of water in the AM before work.

I think they are very powerful. I think UC people need to consume them with caution.

Chocolate with coffee : That is just to get them down, you still must consume a lot of water afterwards and I apologize for making irresponsible and confusing statements

I do believe this sets up good growth of positive bacteria so combining probiotics and non-sugary yogurt is what I think makes it work.

A beautiful woman I used to work with found out I have been ill and that my health care wont pay for VSL#3DS and so she ordered some VSL#3 and sent them to my home.

I love that girl.

tried the bars and it made me worse. It gave me gas and made me go more. I take psyllium seed/husk powder combo and think I am going to stick with that. Thanks for the idea.

Hey sorry man. I would cram the psyllium seed powder into the large blank capsules. 2, 3 of them were not as good as when I used to use a full tablespoon. So if I do that again I will use 8 and a LARGE glass of water.

Psyllium husk has never hurt me.

Maybe you should have only had a few bites of the bars but whatever its obviously not working for you.

Bars make it more slippery but they definitely acted like concrete and stopped my urgency issues, surprised they made you go more.

I cannot remember when I last went, I stopped all meds, for me the bars were heaven sent.

I have been on and off prednisone since Nov. of 2006. Highest dose I was ever on was 60 mgs for pyoderma gangrenosum in conjunction with my uc. In the beginning it was fairly easy to taper. Recently it has been very hard. In May I suffered a trauma to my left wrist that resulted in pseudo gout in that wrist. My primary put me on 40mg with instructions to do 40mg for 3 days,
30mg for 3 days, 20mg for 3 days, then 10 mg for 3 days. At 20mg I started having mild distress, i.e. aching joints, no energy. At 10mg I was miserable so I went back up to 20. Stayed there a week then started down at 1mg a week. When I hit 12mg. my hands and wrists and shoulders ached. I went back to 13mg and did another week there. I've made it to 11mg now without any ill effects. One source that helped me with tapering was

Just like statistics can be skewed to say whatever you want them to say, so can the use of diet and probiotics to counter uc. Each of us have to find what works for us. I can't afford the VSL3's so I comfort myself by finding research and testimonials that say Benebiotics, an enteric coated pill, works the best. If I believe they will, then I am certain they will.

Some time back there was a young lady on this forum who said her positive thinking helped her overcome her uc. I am sure it did. Before my husband's death in 2006 I was always able to put "mind over matter" to work on my body. That ability was laid to rest in Arlington on my 71st birthday. Today, six years later, I am slowly, with the help of therapy, a great diet and probiotics, regaining my ability to "self-talk" myself through stressful situations instead of succumbing to excruciating flares, feeling as though I don't have enough energy to get up in the morning, and debilitating depression.

As someone posted not too long ago, we are all so different. As with therearemiracles, I stand in awe of aguywithuc. Obviously he's had a lot to overcome in his life besides his uc, and he's come through with flying colors. It probably helps that he has had funds become available to him in the not too distant past; a new home, the ability to spend $$$ to keep the HOA happy. I would wonder if the removal of a # of stressors in his life hasn't contributed to his health.

My only advice for anyone who wants advice is to examine your life and see what's happening that might be contributing to your misery. Not an easy task, but it might help.

I am a Type 2 diabetic. I take 500 mg Metformin morning and evening. I had been able to control my diabetes with diet and exercise until 2006. Once I get completely off prednisone I believe I will be able to get off the Metformin again.
Dx - severe and chronic ulcerative colitis - Treatments included prednisone, remicade, humera,
colazal, and azathioprine. I think there have been others like a rectal suppository whose name I don't remember. I have currently rejected all and am feeling better all the time.
Dx - Pyoderma Gangrenosum - Only known treatment Prednisone.

There are other issues, but won't bore you any longer.

I'm sticking with them they help with not feeling so inflammed in my rectum, but I'm going to go slow very slow with them. I'm so happy for you that a nice woman, what a angel, to have helped you with your probiotics like that!
