I have had nonstop bleeding since mid April, and my iron stores as quickly diminishing, whenever i tried to reintroduce the salofalk enema the bleeding and rectal pain would clearly worsen the next day (at first the helped but after 5 weeks they started to give this paradoxical reaction). Prednisone suppositsories and enemas reduced the bleeding a bit but did not get rid of it.
I am wondering if the bleeding maybe a sign that iam intolerant to the 5ASA iam taking -Pentasa. i have tried Colazal but the bleeding actually got worse. I do not have diarrhoea or abdominal pain after taking the pentasa. But i have this constant (sometimes severe) bleeding whenever i use the toilet, rectal pain and urgency. Sometimes the rectal pain persists for a couple of hours after having a BM and is quite painful. The area feels swollen from the inside and it's hard to push anything out.
I know i can stop the pentasa or any 5ASA for a day or two to see if the bleeding stops but im scared to do it and then get worse; you know like get a full blown pancolitis flareup (like the one i had after giving birth *shudder*).
I have read stories of people who have 5 ASA intolerance and they all seem to get diarrhoea and bad cramps after taking the 5 ASA while i don't.
But because i've had this seemingly nonstop bleeding that hasn't responded to anything (yet) and ive had a reaction to the salofalk enema i cannot help but wonder if maybe the 5ASA is sustaining the bleeding in one way or another,
So can bleeding be the ONLY sign of a 5ASA intolerance?
or am i in denial and trying to find something to blame rather than face the music?

I would think it can be a sign of an intolerance. I've heard of a lot of people have worsening symptoms from 5ASAs but if you're taking it orally on a daily basis and you haven't gotten too much worse or too much better, it just makes me wonder if it's effective. I was in the worst denial for the longest time so I can relate to your feelings. I still have times where I convince myself I have a bacteria or cureable illness but then I come back to reality and accept that it's the nature of this beast.

The bleeding is not from having hemmhoroids, is it? I also had non stop bleeding for about
a month straight and was taking pentasa, and didn't know what it was coming from, but it turned out that it was from internal hemmhoroids. My GI prescribed me some suppositories to see if the bleeding would stop and it did.

Thanks for the replies, appreciate it.
I do have hemorrhoids but i don't think it's just hemorrhoids as i get alot of rectal pain just pushing things and i also get urgency and cramping. I have tried using pentasa suppositories and predsol suppositories for quite a long time (more than a month) and they didn't help the bleeding.
Anyone out there whose major symptom -bleeding- got better when stopping 5ASAs?

I hate to say this but probably the best way to find out is to skip it a day or two. I believe I have read that someone else did this and they could tell the next day.

It says that it also contains sodium benzoate and potassium metabisulfite; so yes.
I asked my GI for a sulfate-free enema and she said they don't exist here in Australia- what the heck am i supposed to do?
You reckon the sulfate in the enemas could be doing this?

I tried to get the Sulfate free one here in the US. I was told there is no such one. We also don't have a 2g one.

There are benzoates in those. My son is sensitive to benzoates in food. I'm concerned about
even trying these types of meds, obviously being a higher concentration.

ConquerUC,
The answer is YES, your worsening bleeding etc... is a definite sign of intolerance.
