sub total colectomy

Last year I had a Sub total colectomy and have the option of having a reversal. I am coping with the bag fine but would rather not have one! Has anyone had the operation and what are their feelings afterwards? Was it a success and are you happy with the outcome and, sorry for more questions, was there any side effects?

Hello & Welcome.

You would probably get a better response to this on the ostomy board but there are a few members here on the UC board who have had surgery - hopefully they will chime in. I have heard the 2nd surgery to reconnect is much easier than the first but having new "plumbing" is not something that is instantly easy, it takes time to learn and get used to as far as I know. We have some members who have a bag and they are equally happy. You don't have to have a reversal I don't think. I am not the best person to answer these questions as I haven't been through it. I have seen mention of loop ileostomy or temp, I am not sure if you have a temp or a perm. I'd be curious to know whether you can keep a temp forever if that is what you have? That's a little beyond my knoweledge unfortunately.
