Hi there! I've only had IBD for about 2 years now and since I've been put on Mesavant, this is my first episode of blood in stools. I can't take my Pentasa, it causes constipation. I honestly don't know if this is a normal part of the disease or if I should see my doctor ASAP. I am in no pain at all and am having moderate normal visits to the bathroom other than the annoying gas I'm dealing with. Any suggestions from those that might be more experienced with IBD?

blood in stool and/or blood on toilet paper, or bloody diarrhea are frequently part of UC flares. However, small amounts might be related to hemorrhoids. Still it might be best to be save an try some preventive/proactive steps.

ai, glad you joined and posted. This forum has been extremely helpful and powerful...even as just a reader from time-to-time. Form your post and as DB says it is a normal party of UC flares to have blood. I am glad you are not experience pain associated with yours. I like to call or visit my GI when I have blood, frequency, urgency and pain all together. My flares were best kept under-wraps with diet. My best suggestion is to learn your triggers. A caffeine free peppermint tea is very soothing during a 'bad bm day'.

Thanks eliztopp! I tried the peppermint tea, which was very soothing before my diagnoses and the beginning of my symptoms and thank goodness, it is still effective. I appreciate your feedback; as a newly diagnosed individual, I never know what I should consider normal and what needs to be brought to my physicians attention. I've also started to watch my food, which is helping as well :)

Blood in stool is IBD/ UC normal. However, it's a new symptom for you. If it sticks around, you might want to call your doctor and talk to the nurse. It might mean you need a slight medication adjustment, or, as others said it could be a hemorrhoid.
